For Your Information

GRANDPARENTS-R-US SELF-HELP SUPPORT GROUP

This Self-help Support Group is designed to address the special needs and concerns of grandparents who, for whatever reasons, are temporary or permanent caretakers of their grandchildren. But, this is not a requirement for participation.

We find that most contemporary grandparents, and even some great- grandparents, are involved in the day-to-day activities of American families in ways that may be unique in precedent. Consider that, while such social matters as addiction to alcohol and other drugs, illiteracy, and unwed mothers aren't new, terms like "crack babies", mob/gang "drive-by" shootings, "babies- having-babies, and "home- invasion robbery" are relatively new terms to recent life-experience. It is doubtful that our own grandparents, with even shorter life- expectancy, endured these kinds of stresses to the degrees experienced by many of today's Seniors.

Seemingly, in the past, social problems were less personally invasive while the concurrent social tendency was to respect and protect the elderly, who were considered wise.

The goals of the organization, Grandparents-R-Us, are to:

  1. impart the skills and techniques of successful coping;
  2. facilitate a self-help group for emotional support;
  3. emphasize the spiritual element of our humanity;
  4. encourage ongoing spiritual growth through Scripture;
  5. generally inform.

    We believe that every adult is responsible for the physical, mental and moral well-being of every child near-by; that `Every child is "MY" child,' and that it is our duty to consciously model desirable attributes and behaviors at all times.

    We consider every topic that can affect our grandchildren - from AIDS to Zits - appropriate and open for discussion! We talk about what it must be like to live in fear and real danger, as many children do, these days. We talk about ways in which we are coping with our own fears - and we talk about the example of the life of Jesus Christ!
