I would be happy to offer any notes of encouragement to those on death & dying. I am caring for a 80 year old father who has spinal stenosis, a hip replacement, and end stage emphazema. I have found in the past year, that this is not a horrible journey, but a wonderful journey! There are times that I am very frustrated because I have three other siblings, including a nurse, who do not want to assist in any way. Through much research, I have found that seniors who need physical assistance can do better in their own homes. There is such a thing as nursing home dementia. When there is family involvement, recouperation is better. I speak openly with my father about death. I have also learned that death is not as horrible as many make it out to be--it is just one more stage in life that must be completed. If seniors are given the opportunity to accept this stage of life, they can actually make their peace with their maker--I am also a novice with death. I am hoping, I can live up to my optimism in the final stages of my father's struggle. I have degree in sci-tech writing from California University of Pennsylvania with emphisis on biology. I have 1 1/2 years of nursing school training. I cared for an elderly woman for four years while in college. I am aware of the needs of the elderly and find those who are middle class suffer a greater loss then those who are finacially well to do or poor. I find that it is hard to micro-manage a population whose needs are so diverse. That is, the elderly who need assistance are still individuals and cannot be grouped into one catagory. Each need is different. My e-mail address is abchughes@stargate.net. Thank you, Judith Hughes
