Reflections on Aging

Remember, old folks are worth a fortune, with silver in their hair, gold in their teeth, stones in their kidneys, lead in their feet, and gas in their stomachs.

WISDOM OF SENIOR CITIZENS

  1. Many societies revere their elders and value their wisdom.
  2. Elders are respected as the source of life, keepers of tradition, leaders, and teachers.
  3. In many cultures, this wisdom is a valuable asset to their people.
  4. How many read about some social issue that is very disturbing?

WHAT ABOUT OUR CULTURE?
  1. The wisdom of our Senior Citizens is not heard in our culture. Why?
  2. The #1 reason is that there are few opportunities to do so.
  3. The media's primary goal is to make money -- not to inform!
  4. Seniors are reluctant to express their views because:
    • There are few opportunities to do so.
    • Letters-to-the-editor are screened, severely edited or limited in other ways.
    • Newspapers fail to accept OP-ED (opposing opinions) since space relates to profits.
    • Even senior organizations provide little or no space for comments on issues.
      1. AARP Bulletin provides less than 3 % space for letters and they are severely edited.
      2. Modern Maturity -- less than 1% and letters severely screened and edited.
      3. Yet AARP claims to represent 35 million senior citizens.
      4. AARP is a for-profit organization intent on selling insurance, travel, credit cards, etc.

Some people, no matter how old they get, never lose their beauty--they merely move it from their faces into their hearts.

I have become a little older now and a few changes have come into my life. Frankly, I have become quite a frivolous old gal. I am seeing five gentlemen every day. As soon as I wake up, WILL POWER helps me get out of bed. Then I go down the hall and see JOHN. Next, CHARLIE HORSE comes along and takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves ARTHUR RITIS shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn't like to stay in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to joint. After a busy day, I'm really tired and glad to relax with BEN GAY.

As for old age, embrace and love it. It abounds with pleasure if you know how to use it. The gradually declining years are among the sweetest in a man's life, and I maintain that, even when they have reached the extreme limit, they have their pleasures still. - Seneca (3 B.C.-65 A.D.)

How beautifully leaves grow old, How full of light and color are their last days. - John Burroughs (1837-1921)
