Drinking cannot be an issue as long as it is done in responsible manner. This still stays true in the world of aging where drinking can be a pleasure, and not a problem.

Alcoholism shouldn’t let you get included in the statistics where one of of ten seniors have drinking problems. You can jest be like Fran Treu, a female senior, who enjoys drinking as a form of pleasure and socialization.

“I usually don’t drink it at home because I’m home alone. But I do enjoy it out with friends with a nice dinner,” she stated.

Being an occasional drinker doesn’t allow her to get drunk the entire night, as her cocktail beverage serves her for additional enjoyment in meeting with her friends. In fact, what she gets from social drinking supports the advantages stated by Stanford University health officials, who contented that:

  1. It has a soothing effect.

  2. Drinking is a part of activity during socialization.

  3. It can make you feel at ease.

Bouchard from Oakland County Sheriff’s Office invites everyone to take part of this program, especially those in the community who has cell phones that are no longer in use.

Aside from equipping the seniors with mobile phones, this program also gives them convenience by typing 9-1-1 in their keypads during emergency. This will definitely provide them faster access to 911.

“I hope the senior citizens of the county will take the opportunity to be part of this program. Having a mobile, emergency means of communication is like having an insurance policy,” Bouchard said. “You don’t know if you’re going to need it, but if you do, you’re covered. Seniors on Divorce

Despite the old age and the need for companionship, seniors undergo divorce. Korea Family Legal Service Center has reported that there have been 331 cases of family counseling that are done with the seniors. And surprisingly, 4.8% of these cases belong to 80 years older. Furthermore, there are 7.8% of cases belong to go to 70 years old and up. Though the reasons vary, the statistics show that the dramatic increase of this rate started back in September 2006.

This fact contradicts the nature of the seniors who approve of strong family ties. But shockingly, 80-year old oldies are having some counseling to save them from the verge of breaking-up

On the other hand, seniors not just deal with problems of their own. They can also be influence in divorces among middle-aged couple where they meddle with their son or daughter’s personal affair.

No matter how colorful we put in the idea of aging, we can’t change the fact that they, somehow, need more attention and more time than we do in taking care of the children. For those who have are not accustomed to their “dynamic” nature, taking care of the seniors can be troublesome – a job that requires tremendous amount of understanding and patience.

This becomes more relative to you if you have seniors in your family. You need to give them proper care – as a way of expressing your gratitude of taking care of you back when you were younger, or if not, let it be the way to show your sense of humanity. If these ideas ring a bell, then remember these things, for it can prepare you from what you’d encounter once you start taking care of them….

  1. They can be very childish. Most seniors who will be needing your full attention are in the stage of second childhood, which means that they start to act like they are children again. They ask you simple and silly things and will ask you the same thing over and over again.

  2. They can no longer do certain things on their own. With this, your full assistance is needed. One of the best example of this is their peeing. There are those who have such difficulty moving their body, so, without such capability, they ave no choice but to pee on their pants. When this happens, you’d know what to do.

Getting older should always mean that you are growing up, and not getting less mature. Unlucky for some, immaturity seems to greet them as they earn another year of their existence. And how can you grow up with this? Apparently, when this continues, growth appears impossible as you get older.

Fortunately, there are two tips in growing old the right way….

  1. Apply the lessons you learned. In every experience you have, there is a lesson that you can learn. Whether it’s something very profound or something practical, the point is, what you acquire will make you better. And in times of struggle, the best way to conquer it is to apply these values.

  2. Taking responsibility. Don’t act stupid and take actions. If you ever commit a mistake, be sure that you admit it and be responsible for it. Make a brave move in fixing the situation by putting your heads up while taking responsible actions.

Age doesn’t have to be the basis of one’s growth. However, it’s shameful that you’ve grown older without maturity and strong sense of value.
