Just because you are no longer driving your own home doesn’t mean that you can no longer have fun outside. Such a thought is impressed in “No Cars, No Worries!” project for Camden Seniors. To prove that they can still enjoy even when they are just using public transportation, the old fellows are given several trips like a tour in The Rocks in Sydney and Gledswood Winery.

A member of NSW Council of Social Service, and also a resident of Camden, Betty Scott, expresses her views about this project. "The fun days out are a wonderful opportunity for people to make use of their pensioner excursion ticket to enjoy a cheap and cheerful day out and, hopefully, make some new friends along the way .”

Since she believes that traveling, even without personal vehicles can still be fun, she enumerates some of its advantages such as gaining new friends, having fun, being independent, knowing how to commute, and even widening horizons.

Nursing Home

Old folks can now live in their home and in the senior community at the same time with the program named Living Independence for the Elderly Care which is designed for the residents of Elderly Erie County.

Since there are seniors who are not comfortable sleeping at another shelter, they can stay in their own home while having proper care that a senior community offers. This is the aim of the program where the seniors are fed, bathed, and given proper medication.

During the evening, when they are already given the right treatment, they will be escorted back to their home and do the same routine when the sun rises. With this, the Village of Luther Square will offer the same proper service starting 7 in the morning.

The chief executive of the Village of Luther Square, Mark Gusek, says "It’s much more than a senior day-care center. I refer to it as an outpatient nursing home.”

An Active Center

A community with a capacity of 550 seniors or more will be established by the Medical Center of Independence to provide programs and shelter for active seniors.

It might take an estimated $12-million community with recreational areas such as theater, pub, indoor and outdoor pools, and bowling alley. The purpose of these amenities is for the enrichment of the active seniors who keep fit with several games and sports. On the other hand, the location would be the former MCI campus which will be renovated.

Proper Care

When you are taking care of the old, be sure that you know many things about their condition - their health, mental activities, and even psychological condition, because in this way you’ll only be able to become an effective care taker.  And now that you are going to give back all the love and the care to your grandparents, these are some of the fundamental things that you should remember:

1. Bring some of their personal belongings when you go out. This can be their eyeglasses, walking sticks, and medicine. Going out can be stressful to them, even when they are hitting a distant road. Since the condition of the seniors tend to become unpredictable because of some factors like surroundings and activities, emergency may occur anytime. Because of this, you should be prepared and bring their medicine to prevent further complications. Furthermore, there could be activities that might require full attention and participation so stuff like eyeglasses and walking stick may help them out.

2. Get to know their needs. Seniors do have a different set of needs than the younger ones. Their health is one of those primary concerns and being acquainted with their condition will help you determine how to take care of them in terms of giving food and doing proper exercise.

3. Develop a bonding with them. It’ll be better when you get to know them personally, about their family, their interests, the things they used to do….. Listen to what they say for you might never know that you will be able to learn from those things that they speak.

Showing Love

It is just a month away before Christmas is celebrated with  your friends and of course, your family.  As you design your Christmas tree, you wonder how your grandmother and your grandfather do to prepare for this special season. With this, you begin to feel like you are missing them, motivating you to come to their home and visit them.

This is a wonderful thing to do to a senior considering that they must be lonely growing old alone with their spouse, or even just by themselves. When you think that they are getting more blue by their loneliness, then it’s time for you to do something special to make them happy, and that they are special too.

1. Give them something hand-made. Knowing that you exert effort just to give make them smile is a heart-warming gesture for your grandparents…. makes them feel like they are worth the effort.

2. Accompany them. Seniors do need assistance because of their physical condition. With this, be sure that you help them with care and concern. Help them walk, do the chores, and do the things they like so they can feel that they are really not alone.

3. Tell them that you love them. Nothing is as special as knowing that someone out there genuinely loves you. Since your grandparents are experiencing physical, emotional, intellectual, and psychological stress, telling them that you love them can be the cure to beat these things.

Making Them Happy

You can no longer throw a party  for your son and daughter because you can no longer handle the stress. Yo can no longer cook for your grand kids because cooking can be stressful. And you can no longer chase and play with your dog because your body can no longer move like the way it used to. Hmmmm, there are things that you miss because of the weaker condition of your body as you grow old. You miss doing those things because those are the things that cheer them up. But now that you are old, your willingness to do that may be stopped because of your physical condition, which later, can make you unable to make them happy.

On the other hand, this thought can be wrong especially when you know how to cheer them in a different, but easy way.

1. Make cards. It isn’t as stressful as cooking where you bake, boil, and fry certain ingredients for a certain amount of time just to get that perfect taste. By making cards, you can be entertained without exerting too much effort for the things that you’ll do is cutting, putting decorations and colors, and writing - something that won’t tire you out and at the same time, will entertain you and make you creative.

2. Show affection. Patting their back, holding their hand, hugging them, and saying that you love them are already adequate to make them smile.

3. Bond with them. Let them know that you really care by asking them about their lives and sharing your stories. This is just a step in developing deeper bonding with them.

60’s Pop Culture

Surely, a senior folk like you is living in a new generation, where everything seems unfamiliar and new to you. And sometimes, you cannot relate yourself to their trends because they are just too different for you. This is one of those moments when you wish you were still a kid back in your time – when everything around you is something that is casual and common to you.

  1. Fashion. Don’t you want to check your old closet before when you hang all of your hip clothes that put the people in awe when you wear ‘em. It’s fun to see those hot pants that show off your beautiful legs when you walk and those more casual hats that accentuated your outfit.

  2. Entertainment. Don’t you love to see the stars with their wonderful performances with their love stories and musical presentation like “The Sound of Music.” Of course, everyone, especially the girls, love to listen to the cute and the talented Beatles where they sing their hearts out and mesmerize everyone with their songs.

  3. Toys. Children would be shock to know that back then, their space toys and remote-controlled toys were already produced back in the 60’s. Apparently, children would be able to appreciate the pop culture back then.

Risks in the Bathroom

Seniors, having weaker bodies have limited their movement due to their condition. Because of this, they are more prone to accidents even when they are just inside their home. In fact, most of the accidents they have happen inside their home with falls, the major cause of senior injuries

In can happen in the stairs, where wrong footing is tantamount to serious injuries, and even death. Yeah, it can also happen to any part of the house – living room, dining area, bathroom, which in fact is fact can be more dangerous for seniors since it is usually slippery.

The general manager of Advocate Home Care, John Kolar, people should consult a home care specialist regarding the design of their bathroom. The things seniors use in the bathroom would help them avoid having accidents and falls.

Sad Facts

Sad thing to say but there are seniors who don’t have that family who is willing to take care of them and do something for them especially during the times when they need it. Either they live alone or go to a senior community to be with fellow seniors and be taken care by some medical strangers.

Oraclepoll Research must have noticed such condition, making them conduct a survey regarding this issue. It was commissioned by Friendly to Seniors Sudbury where 252 seniors were asked about their age, gender, marital and financial status, educational background, employment and health.

The results are devastating, as it expresses their needs genuine care.

  • 24% of the respondents no longer have the capacity to do some househols chores like preparing the table, grocery shopping, and cleaning the house properly.

  • 10.8% don’t have any loved ones living in the urban areas.

  • 40% of them complained about the condition of the sidewalks, a major disturbance for seniors who uses scooters and wheelchairs.

  • 78% drive their own vehicle, an unhealthy deed for a senior.

Have you ever wondered what it’d be like when you’re given the chance to back to your past? You’d have this chance to get into something you wish you still had, but because of aging, you can never get back to them. But if you only had that chance…..

  1. Wedding Day. Of course. Who doesn’t want to get back on that very special day of their lives? It only lasted a day but it took a year of preparation for that moment when you’re going to tie the knot with the one you love.

  2. Graduation Day. Your special day when you were still a student who accomplished academic completion. It’s a bitter sweet moment for you and your friends.

  3. Fun moments with someone you love. How you vandalize on a wall, how you broke some rules, how you got dirty with mud, and how you laughed at the top of your lungs after a silly thing. These were just ordinary days but were worth remembering.
