Handling Diverticulosis

Diverticulosis is a disease that is common among the elderly. If your elser family member is diagnosed with this disease then fiber is the best solution. However, there are times that some adults have issues with fiber especially when they have high blood pressure or has trouble with excessive gas.

Foods that are high in fiber are needed to facilitate the formation of feces and anyone’s bowel movements. Fiber enriched food require adequate hydration. Normally, 7 grams of fiber is enough for the day. More of it may lead to bloating and flatulation. Another cause of flatulation is lactose intolerance which is very common among adults.

Exercise is very helpful in normalizing bowel movements as well. There are instances though that contribute to the bowel movement like medication for diabetes. If the elder is having problems with gas due to fiber enriched food, there are over - the - counter drugs that can solve this issue.

Having an ill elder in the family is probably one of the saddest scenarios that anyone might get into. The government will always be prepared to lend a helping hand.

Every state has something like a Department on Aging that anyone can approach. They will then be able to assist so that you can better understand the programs that they have to offer and the packages that you can afford. They will study your financial situation and then quote a program that is suitable. The first thing to possibly consider is by looking for a physician that works with seniors, preferably a geriatrician. Evaluation is needed when searching for a good physician. You have to decide if you are going to go for home care or for if you would rather choose an institution. Either way, this will be a good start in taking care of your elderly family member.

Senior Expenses

Unknown to many, seniors spend more on health care each year than any other segment of the population. They spend 3 times the amount of any younger group. We all know that seniors need health care and it is by far understandable if their bills accumulate up to 10 to 30% of their annual income.

On top of that, medicine bills has always been a problem. They have to keep up to date and on the dot with their medications to keep them healthy.

Because of these trying times, seniors need to save a good amount of money to survive. There are several ways to do this such as cutting off on costs that are really not needed and by using coupons when purchasing items. Coupons will give them discounts on things that they need to buy.

If you have a senior in the family, try to understand their sentiments especially when it comes to money since they have really a lot of things to spend on.

Knee Replacement

Knee replacement is a common treatment that most seniors who experience advanced osteoarthritis of the knee undergo. The decision to replace the knee joint is dictated by the increasing pain that a senior feels and the decreasing function of the knee.

The procedure is often tagged with great pain and discomfort and it often requires an intense rehabilitation that will follow the replacement procedure. Follow up with the orthopedist and therapist is a must to assure the improvement of the function of the joint and to monitor pain.

If the mobility is satisfactory but the pain still remains, then a visit to the orthopedist is highly recommended and if afterwards, relief is not attained, then it is about time to ask for a second opinion.

Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction is a common problem that hounds the senior years. However, the aging process brings in a lot of changes including the sexual function. As a whole, the changes include more stimulation to attain erection, retaining erection and the reduction in sperm count.

Medications like certain heart and blood pressure medicines are often the culprits that cause dysfunction. Fortunately, sexual dysfunction can be treated. It is very important to discuss this matter with the partner and make sure that they understand this stage that they are going through. Anyone in their early 60’s are still young for therapy and this problem can be solved accordingly.

Seniors experience so much pain whenever they are hounded by arthritis and some would have researched on various techniques to work around the pain. They may have come across magnet therapy. Will it truly help relieve pain?

Experts are still doubtful of the fact that magnet therapy will really help since studies are still being conducted and there is no clear cut conclusion yet. In one of the major trials of magnets therapy, it helped in diabetic neuropathy and even outperformed placebo.

Therapeutic magnets have low force and at that level, it seem to do no harm. As experts would say, if it will relieve the pain for a patient then the use of it will not be discouraged. Ample endorsements will then be done if science can prove that magnet therapy is better than others in relieving pain.

Living the Senior Life

My aunt recently retired from her job as a teacher in a public school. She just turned 65 and frantically living the life of a senior. I was intrigued by the fact that she has never been happy all her life until the day she became a senior. There are a lot of perks and privileges of being a senior. Based on my observations in her daily lifestyle, she has been spending minimal money on her daily medications because of the big discounts for senior citizens. Also, she’s been getting a lot of freebies from restaurants.

Right now, she;s actually preparing for a trip all over Asia. I guess it feels good to have the time to have fun. She did not have most of it when she was working as a teacher. Look at her now, living a happy lifestyle!

Balance Problem

As people become older, problems with balance often kick in. This is a prominent problem among seniors and often lead to injuries or even death. A great sense of balance helps a senior walk without staggering, get up from a chair or from be without falling back or clim stairs without tripping.

Often times, disturbances in the inner ear are the culprits. People who have this problems feel unsteady or as if they are moving, spinning or even floating. The feeling of spinning things is called a vertigo which is a common problem of 40% of Americans.

If you or any other senior experience this kind of problem, then it is about time that you see a doctor and get a good check up.

How to Eat

For seniors, having a healthy diet is important. A balanced meal brings in a lot of health benefits such as increased energy, strength, better balance, good skin condition and many more. However, it is not just the food intake that matters, the way the food was taken is similarly important.

Chewing the food well is not just an old cliche but it really is important to chop the food into smaller particles for easy digestion and to extract nutrients. Eating under stress is a big no. Stress makes a person eat a lot of food as a scapegoat to release tension. Also, listen to your body when eating. Stop when you feel full. Eat early and eat often is a good way to take food into your system. A good breakfast is a terrific jumpstart for every person and following it up with full lunch and ending with a good dinner is probably the best way to cap the day.

Tai Chi For Seniors

Tai chi is the chinese way of accumulating energy for the body through its slow movement and breathing techniques. Other exercises dissepate energy while tai chi keeps a senior’s body refreshed after the exercise. It is known to have a lot of great health benefits.

It has been confirmed by recent studies that after 20 minutes of Tai Chi, a senior will have an improved balance to reduce the risk of falls, improved leg and lower body strength, increased flexibility, help with arthritis pain, aid in the recovery of injuries and after 12 weeks, they will have a small but a very significant drop in their blood pressure.

However, not all forms of tai chi are concentrated on health. There are deadly forms of tai chi used as martial arts. For a senior, health tai chi is more than enough to keep them healthy and strong.
