Surviving Heart Attack
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
It seems like heart attack is still one major problem what adults and seniors are basically scared off. Yesterday, a senior from my neighborhood just survived heart attack even if he was all alone for the day. Absolutely no one was available to help and its a good thing though that he knows what to do or else, he could have been added in the list of deaths due to heart attack.
First thing he did was cough pretty hard and repeatedly and vigorously. He took a deep breath after every cough until such time that his heart was breathing normal once again. Those deep breathes that he took got oxygen into his lungs and the coughing squeezed the heart which eventually kept the blood circulating and it even got the heart back into its normal rhythm.
Are you ready to take on heart attack? If this man can do it, so can you.

Life begins at 80

I did not think that this would be an inspirational poem. Neither did I find it that funny because it was filled with a touch of reality. What I think of this poem is the fact that a senior is valuable. Check it out and I hope you all agree with me.
Found in an Ann Landers Column
"LIFE BEGINS AT 80"
by Frank Laubach
I have good news for you.
The first 80 years are the hardest.
The second 80 are a succession
Of birthday parties.
Once you reach 80,
Everyone wants to carry your baggage
And help you up the steps.
If you forget your name,
Or anybody else’s name,
Or an appointment,
Or your own telephone number,
Or promise to be three places
At the same time,
Or can’t remember how many
Grandchildren you have,
You need only explain that you are 80.
Being 80 is a lot better than being 70.
At 70 people are mad at you for everything.
At 80 you have a perfect excuse,
No matter what you do.
If you act foolishly,
It’s your second childhood.
Everybody is looking for symptoms
Of softening of the brain.
Being 70 is no fun at all.
At 70 they expect you to retire
To a house in Florida
And complain about your arthritis.
And you ask everybody to stop mumbling
Because you can’t understand them.
(Actually your hearing is about 50% gone.)
If you survive until you are 80,
Everybody is surprised that you are still alive.
They treat you with respect
Just for having lived so long.
Actually they seem surprised
That you can walk and talk sensibly.
So, please, folks, try to make it to 80.
It’s the best time of your life.
People forgive you for anything.
If you ask me, life begins at 80.

Additional Pills

Alzheimer’s is a dreaded disease. This hurts the entire family of any senior who has the disease. One of those families include mine. My grandfather has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease last year.
He begins forgetting things at a specific period of time which has been pretty devastating for us especially on his grandchildren. On top of this problem, he has been having a lot of trouble falling asleep. He wanted to take those sleeping pills that he used to take but then doctors have warned us that medications should be carefully administered since it may cause more problems in the long run.
It was then that I learned how delicate an Alzheimer’s victim is. All we could do now is understand and care for him. So if your senior is having problems with this disease, try to understand them and show them utmost care. Also, make sure that you watch every medicine that he takes in.

Clicking sound

Click! Click! There goes that sound again as Mrs. Scott walks across the hallway. She thought it was her shoes. But to her surprise, it was her knee. She had it replaced a couple of months ago. The surgery was good but now, the sound is back and the clicking is driving her insane.
What is this sound? Experts say that this "Crepitus" in a joint replacement or in the general area of the replacement indicates a problem with the artificial joint itself. The development of that clicking sound all of a sudden merits an additional contact with the physician and more importantly, with the surgeon who performed the operation.

Going out and having fun
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Senior life is not just about staying at home, drinking medication, worrying about diet and thinking about retirement homes. Going out and having fun must be a part of a senior lifestyle as well.
I could remember the time when my grandmother took me ballroom dancing. I was not a good dancer. Most of the night I sat down drank my martini and watched my grandmother move. She was having fun alright. It was a night out that she always attends to. I could see that all the stress is being relieved. After all, the senior years has been great for her. She’s been enjoying a lot of time for herself. She’s free from work and all the other stress factors.
Speaking of going out. If you are in the area of Cincinnati, They will be having a Seniors night out at Sharonville Community Center. There will be a great dinner prepared and a lot of socializing.
Go out and have fun! You deserve it.

Mammography for seniors
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
As we all know, mammography is the gold-standard in detecting and screening breast cancer. There was a study that breast cancer in the senior years spread faster after 70 years of age.
Experts say that seniors must be screened for breast cancer even in their golden years because they may never know if they have one. This will help reduce the deaths caused by the dreaded disease. There are doubts by some seniors that it may be dangerous because of their old age. It has been tested in the study that breast cancer spreads rapidly in the old days maybe because the fighting system or the immune system of the body is not that strong anymore. In most cases, earlier detection makes the job to kill the cancer cells a lot easier.
For seniors, mammography is a test that has to be done. I believe in the study and they have proven the death rate could slow down if it was detected earlier.

A well recognized senior

Does the name Suzanne Roberts ring a bell? Of course it does. She’s the 86 year old actress, director, lecturer, moderator and now, the host of Comcast’s Seeking Solutions with Suzanne.
On their next episode, Suzanne will be interviewing a survivor of the Holocaust - Gerda Weissmann Klein who was just 15 years old when the Nazis invaded Poland. She endured 6 years under the dreaded Nazi rule, lost her parents, brother and her friends.
Suzanne is someone that most seniors look up to for guidance and advise. It is a good thing that there are seniors like Suzanne who show up and make things a lot easier for others.

A century of laughter
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Is laughter the greatest medicine? I bet it is. This woman right here knows how funny it is to smoke at such a delicate age. By the way, it’s her birthday so wish her all the luck in her 100th birthday.
Caution: Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health (especially if your 100 years old.)

In Shelbyville, Indiana, the oldest person on the face of the planet, Edna Parker, will turn 115 years old this coming Sunday. Scientists call them supercentenarians who can help the field of research in the mystery of longevity.
Even her grandchildren are wondering how she lived for so long. Don Parker said that she has never been worried and was always thin. Sot hey thought that maybe it was her lifestyle or her genes.
Several years ago, Edna’s DNA samples were taken and kept along with 100 other people who made the 110-year old ceiling. Scientists said that they may be the ones who can help in the quest for longevity enabling genes.
Parker was born on April 20, 1893 and was recognized by Guiness to be the oldest person to walk the planet since the death of a Japanese woman who was four months older than her. She was a widow back in 1938 where her husband died of heart attack. When she reached 100, she moved in to one of her sons and then cheated death a couple of months later. They said that it was on a winter day when she went missing and she was found by her grandson freezing outside. All she suffered was frost bites. She even outlived 2 of her sons
When they ran a family history, scientists noticed that her sisters died at the age of 99 and 8 which then moved Dr. Nir Barzilai, the director of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, to quote that longevity is in the family history.
Other scientists believe that the secret to a long life is now believed to be a mix of genetics and environmental factors like health habits. To conclude, they said that they seem to handle stress better than the rest of humans.
Genetics or whatever other reason it may be, it seems that they are handling their lives perfectly. They never worry too much, they stay in shape and manage to be healthy. I think that would suffice as the secret to a long life. But of course, I would like the research to draw to a close because this research about longevity enabling genes will surely spell a difference in the world today.

Correct Posture
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Posture is one of the darkest problems of a senior. They may not notice it but in their younger and more glorious years, they may have slouched too much. My grandfather had this problem when he was still alive. He experienced a lot of strain and a lot of problems with his lower back and shoulders.
What seniors need to work out on is their posture. They need to sit up straight or stand straight to attain a good posture. They have to relax their muscles and bones before they get used to being in a slouched position.
To encourage this, you should try to have one ergonomically designed chair for them to sit on. This will help hone their posture back in shape OR you can purchase a posture correction machine. I read a couple of reviews from machines and they work pretty well.
