Who would have thought that two elderly woman would be accused of killing a homeless man so that they could collect millions of dollars in insurance payouts? Well it happened and they were convicted of it for conspiracy to murder and one was convicted of murder.
Helen Golay, 77 and Olga Rutterschmidt, 75 were both convicted in los Angeles last Wednesday. Golay was convicted for first degree murder of Kenneth McDavid, 50 back in 2005 and Paul Vados, 73, back in 1999. Rutterschmidt on the other hand was convicted of conspiracy to murder McDavid for financial gain.
According to prosecutors, the women collected around $2.8 million from insurance policies on the lives of two homeless men who were killed in staged hit-and-runs.
Golay carries a possible life in prison without a possibility of parole while the other faces sentence of 25 years to life.
If they weren’t caught, this could have happened to other homeless men. Literally, what they did robbed the men who had nothing. They never needed much money. They were not poor. What we could see out there were a couple of seniors who are literally the worst of the worst.
read comments (0)Who would have thought that even a senior could join a social networking site? I was in a retirement home a few hours ago to visit my grandmother. When I knocked at the door, she was with her friend and they were laughing pretty good. I entered the room to join in the fun and saw that they are online.
They recently joined a new social networking site very similar to MySpace, Facebook and Friendster. The thing is, this is just a new network. There are like less than a thousand members yet but I sure think that it is slowly growing (considering the fact that my grandmother is already a member). I asked them why they joined it instead of the popular ones. They said that the popular ones looked pretty complicated unlike this one. It’s called 3GB community. I thought about it and read a couple of reviews. It seemed to be good and has a bright future ahead of it.
All the while I thought this networking sites are designed for teens and young professionals. Who would have thought that my grandmother would like it. But either way, they are having fun. I might as well join in.
Who would have thought that a not-so-educated retired guy would be able to develop a machine that would potentially help cancer patients? Yes you heard that right, one guy was able to create a wonderful machine that he considered out of sheer luck.
He had leukemia before and he experienced a lot of pain during his chemotherapy sessions. There was a time that he could not sleep and just told himself, "There’s got to be something else to cure cancer." And so he got up, and went straight to the kitchen. He found a couple of pans lights and some gas. He built his machine that night. His wife got up with the noise that he made and once thought that he has lost it. She said that even doctors and researchers are having problems finding the cure for cancer and how could he possibly do that considering his nature and background? But then he did not give up. His first test was on a hotdog wherein he injected some chemical in it. He ran it through the machine and it didn’t affect the structure of the hotdog, which is a good thing but the best thing is that, it got rid of the chemical. And he just thanked the Lord for what he has accomplished since that device is really something very helpful.
His machine is now currently with two of the most influencial research establishments all over the United States and they are modifying it in order to have a machine that will kill the cancer cells in a painless and free from side effects manner. This is probably the biggest health breakthrough in ages. According to other researchers, this invention is by far the most interesting one that they have come across with so far. Let’s all hope that this goes out well. People are already funding this project and seriously, this one is big when it goes to the market. Not only will it heal people with cancer but it can also reduce the cost of constantly having chemotherapy and other medications.
Older adults often develop the problem of "tennis elbow" or epicondylitis. This problem is related to some degree of trauma to the tendons that are inserted into the elbow. Usually, an elastic band is used to modify the forces on the tendons and allow the inflammation to decrease. A senior that is having problems with tennis elbow must avoid activities that inflict pain.
Doctors would sometimes recommend anti inflammatory agents such as rofexib and others but this needs prescription from a health care provider who will be examining the senior and review the medical history to confirm the doctor’s diagnosis and assure that the medication is appropriate. Some use steroid injections. Even if there are a lot of suggested remedies, the discomfort may last for a couple of months. Exercise is also important and are recommended by most health care providers. Among the recommended exercises are extending both arms in front, make a fist and bring knuckles back 20 or more times.
For seniors, buying a new home takes a lot of time to think over and to find out what will really work. Even if it is hard to think things over, seniors have the luxury of having freedom. This will give them the opportunity to be free to create their own decision. Th main things to consider is their finances, health and kind of lifestyle.
There are three stages in which seniors should consider during their housing phase.
First is selling their previous house in order to be ready to move in to the appropriate home to enjoy the remainder of their senior years. They must keep in touch with good agents who will be willing to help them sell their old house and look for the appropriate new home for them. Second thing to consider is to look for the best home to spend their active senior years. Do not choose or settle for a house that is just good. Choose the best. Lastly, selling your individual senior home and to prepare to move into an independent, assisted or care facility.
The elderly is pretty much susceptible to bone problems and fractures. As age catches up, nutrition must be closely watched. There are studies that prove vitamin deficiencies are associated with fractures and stomatitis.
They say that low vitamin D and calcium contribute to the problems with bones. Magnesium can also be an issue if it is insufficient. Vitamin B complex, particularly B1 and B6, and Vitamin C deficiencies together with Zn deficiencies are closely associated with stomatitis.
How do we work around this problems? Consult your physician for the best vitamins that will suit your needs. They will be able to recommend a good supplement for the vitamins that you need to have. Also, having a healthy diet will definitely help. Exercise will make the body stronger as well.
For the past years, spam has been one of the major problems of everyone who has an email address of their own. Recently, spam has gone over board. Scam artists are targeting seniors by flooding their inbox with fake lottery prize tickets.
This just goes to show everyone that scam artists are capable of faking even our dearly beloved seniors. It will be heart breaking if seniors find out that they did not even win. Some may even have a heart attack because of it.
So if you are a senior, please be aware that there are scam artists out there who will do everything they can to fool you and trick you into doing something that you will soon regret. Make it a point that when you check your inbox, try not to believe everything that is present there. You may never know unless you are absolutely sure.
I was once asked by my senior aunt if her diet will lead to future problems. Truth is, she misses eating salty foods. Since she turned into a senior, her doctor prescribed a healthy diet for her heart.
Over the past few years, she was used to eating a lot of salty foods and calories. Now, she misses them so much that she sneaks in some fish sauce each and everytime she eats something. The only thing that I said that could cause problems is the way she sneaks in a couple of salt in every meal she takes. While there are no particular risks in her diet, all I could find was her problem with her cravings.
As per her doctors prescription, she should be thankful that she is not taking in any medications yet. There are a lot of seniors who take in a series of medicines every after every meal plus they also have strict diet. Its a good thing that she only has to deal with her diet.
So if your senior family member is experiencing the type of crave that my aunt is having then explain to them that they should follow the diet strictly because it is for their own good. No doctor would put their patients in harm’s way.

Hospice is a type of health care that focuses mainly on interventions that do not hasten death and neither does it prolong life. It focuses on comfort and dignity rather than cure. More often than not, there are multiple diseases that coincide making the condition terminal. Typically, aggressive treatments that are designed to prolong life are avoided and discontinued. Therefore, dialysis and the likes are discontinued.
There are cases however wherein some of the treatments of the diseases are continued but this goes under careful consideration.
For a senior, hospice is a place to enjoy the remainder of their lives and not to think about the pain of aggressive medications. This is probably the time for them to enjoy sitting in front of their television without thinking of anything other than the show itself. This is their time and personally, I would prefer this over a series of painful treatments.
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that does not have any genetic risk linked to it. Women are at a greater risk than males and there are no current studies that will prove that a child can get the disease. There are some markers though that have been linked with Alzheimer’s but there many people who never get the disease.
There are medications such as Vitamin E, estrogen therapy for women, anti inflammatory drugs and herbal medicines suce as Gingko Biloba that are said to prevent or somehow delay the onset of the disease. Also, continuing to use the mind with cognitive exercises and reading helps in preventing Alzheimer’s disease.
Research is still being conducted as to what are the exact causes of this disease and the search for a definitive treatment or prevention is still underway.
