Cutting the fall

fall.jpg
Reuters - Falls are one of the deadliest problems that hound seniors. It is actually the most common reason for deaths. However, falls can be cut significantly when health care providers take basic stems like prescribing physical therapy, monitoring medications and checking blood pressure. This is according to a group of researchers who are doing a study.

There is a program like that in Connecticut which helped reduce the number of falls among the elderly by 9 percent. In addition to that, the decrease of falls have saved around $21 million worth of health care costs.

If more programs like this will be conducted, then a significant decrease will save a lot of money that could be used for other things like treating the ailing economy.

Granny the grappler

fox3.jpg
In Stroudsburg, Pa., there was a 77 year old grandmother who allegedly pinned down a fox that bit her. She managed to hold on to it until help finally arrived. She was attacked when she was outside their farmhouse tending her petunias.

She pushed the animal to the ground after it bit her and held the jaw shut while the other arm flagged a passing driver with the other. Her teenage grandson shot the animal.

She lost a huge amount of blood from the 7 leg and arm wounds. She went into surgery just to clean out those wounds. She spent four days confined in the hospital after the attack. She has been taking a lot of antibiotics and pain medicine to help speed the recovery.

Tests on the fox indicated that it was indeed rabid. Initially, granny thought that her attacker was a dog. To her surprise, she just pinned down a rabid fox.

Age joke

criminal.jpg
Bill, a 70 year old extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25 year-old blonde who knocks everyone’s socks off with her youthful appeal and outright charm while hanging over Bills arm and listening intently to his every word.

His buddies at the club are all aghast. They corner him and ask, “Bill how did you get the trophy girlfriend?”

Bill replies, “Girlfriend? She’s my wife!”

They’re knocked over, but continue to ask. “So, how did you persuade her to marry you?”

Bill says, “I lied about my age.”

His friends respond, “What do you mean? Did you tell her you were only 50?”

Bill smiles and says, “No, I told her I was 90.”

The refrigerator joke

ist2_1414635_refrigerator-737427.jpg70-year old George went for his annual physical. All of his tests came back with normal results. Dr. Smith said, "George, everything looks great physically. How are you doing mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with yourself, and do you have a good relationship with God?"

George replied, "God and me are tight. He knows I have poor eyesight, so he’s fixed it so that when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom poof the light goes on, when I’m done poof the light goes off."

"Wow!" commented Dr. Smith, "That’s incredible!"

A little later in the day, Dr. Smith called George’s wife. "Ethel," he said, "George is doing fine. Physically he’s great. But, I had to call because I’m in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night and poof the light goes on in the bathroom, and then when he is through poof the light goes off?"

Ethel exclaimed, "Oh, my God! He’s peeing in the refrigerator again!"

A good night’s rest is vital to the overall health and energy levels. Because you body recovers from exercise while you are resting, they can even help you workouts be more effective. Unfortunately , many people do things that harm the quality of their sleep without even realizing it.

If you are interesting in making your sleep more restful, follow these simple tips.

Cut Out TV Watching Before Sleep - One of the most important things that you can do to improve the quality of your sleep is to limit television watching right before bedtime. Staring directly at a screen, whether its on a television or a computer, can be very stimulating to your brain, which can make it more difficult to fall asleep. And once you do finally fall asleep, your sleep probably won’t be as restful as it could be because you will spend less time in the “REM” stage of sleep. You are much better off engaging is more relaxing activities

Limit Alcohol and Caffeine Right Before Bed - Your nightcap might just be harming the quality of your sleep as well. While it’s true that small amounts of alcohol can make you sleepy, they actually wind up making your sleep less energizing. Alcohol can disrupt your sleep pattern and hurt you body’s ability to recover from exercise. It can also make snoring worse, which can also make your sleep less restful.

You should also obviously avoid drinking any stimulants like caffeinated tea or coffee before you go to bed. If you are looking for something to drink, you might consider herbal tea.

Exercise Regularly - Good exercise and good sleep go hand in hand together. When you sleep well, you have more energy to exercise. And when you exercise well, you are able to sleep better. Studies even suggest that people who make certain to get some exercise every day actually spend more time in “deep sleep” at night. So make certain to exercise at least half an hour every day, and a full hour if you have the time.

Eat a Light Dinner - Eating too large of a dinner can also harm the quality of your sleep. When your body is expending energy digesting a meal, you are less able to sleep comfortably. Instead eat a light dinner about two hours before you plan on hitting the hay.

Make Your Room Comfortable - Do what you can to try and make your room as comfortable and dark as you possibly can. If you shades let too much light from outside in, consider replacing them. If it gets too hot or too cold at night, try purchasing a stand up fan or better covers. If you are at all uncomfortable at night you won’t be able to sleep as well, and your overall energy levels can suffer.

The spokesperson of Pfizer said that they stopped marketing Mirapex back in 2005 when there was a medical study that was published which quickly linked the drug to compulsive behaviors which includes gambling.

The former banker then stopped using the prescribed drugs and joined a gambler’s support group. Within a span of five weeks, he had already stopped gambling.

Senior marriage joke

elderly-couple.jpgThere were two elderly people living in a Florida mobile home park. He was a widower and she a widow. They had known one another for a number of years.

One evening there was a community supper in the big activity center. The two were at the same table, across from one another. As the meal went on, he made a few admiring glances at her and finally gathered his courage to ask her, "Will you marry me?"

After about six seconds of ‘careful consideration,’ she answered. "Yes. Yes, I will."

The meal ended and, with a few more pleasant exchanges, they went to their respective places. Next morning, he was troubled. "Did she say ‘yes’ or did she say ‘no’?" He couldn’t remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. Not even a faint memory. With trepidation, he went to the telephone and called her. First, he explained that he didn’t remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the lovely evening past.

As he gained a little more courage, he inquired, "When I asked if you would marry me, did you say ‘Yes’ or did you say ‘No’?"

He was delighted to hear her say, "Why, I said, ‘Yes, yes I will’ and I meant it with all my heart." Then she continued, "I am so glad that you called, because I couldn’t remember who had asked me."

Yahoo! News - According to a group of researchers, the proper treatment of high blood pressure in the elderly may give a possible reduction of the risk of developing dementia. It has been known that the blood pressure treatment in those who are over the age of 80 helps in reducing risks of heart attacks and fatal strokes. They said that there may be an additional benefit in terms of prevention of dementia.

The findings were seen on an analysis done to nearly 4,000 people. They found out that the blood pressure drug helped in reducing risk of death from stroke and from any other cause. There were several studies that linked dementia and high blood pressure which is marked by a significant loss of memory and cognitive abilities which include the ability to speak and identify objects.

The latest analysis aims to look at whether the treatment would help stave off dementia. The researchers said that anything that can help reduce dementia incidence is important and that is why they are continuing the research to help prevent and somehow reduce dementia.

The 3 elders joke

Three sisters ages 72, 74, and 76 live in a house together. One night the 76 year old draws a bath. She puts her foot in and pauses. She yells down the stairs "was I getting in or out of the bath?".

The 74 year old yells back "I don’t know. I’ll come up and see."

She starts up the stairs and pauses. Then she yells "was I going up the stairs or down?"

The 72 year old is sitting at the kitchen table having tea listening to her sisters. She shakes her head and says "I sure hope I never get that forgetful."

She knocks on wood for good measure. She then yells "I’ll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who’s at the door".
