Emergencies strike when they are least expected but that doesn’t mean we should not anticipate it. It is always best to come prepared for the worst battle of all especially we, seniors, are usually less agile than our younger housemates plus, at times like these, we should be able to carry ourselves out of the danger zone independently.
I don’t care if they call me paranoid or something, at least I know what to do if the unfortunately time hits home. So here are some few basic safety tips for seniors in getting ready for emergencies. Just keep these things in mind and you will be fine.

At an alarming rate, more and more seniors are now facing credit card debts according to National Consumer Law Center report. If this report is indeed true, then seniors who should have been enjoying their golden years free of binding debts are now spending their advance years paying for the accumulating bills.
Let’s not be judgmental about this whole affair. While younger adults uncontrollably spend their money on expendable things, seniors do require some money to spend around for the things they need, primarily for medical expenses which are getting steeper everyday.
It seems that seniors also suffer from the economic crisis which we all experience nowadays; only, the hit was a little bit hard for them to bear especially for those with fixed incomes and little retirement money. The convenience of credit card has always been there for us to use, whether we can pay up or not. Worse, credit card companies are more than happy to raise the card’s limit which in effect, encourages consumers to charge more than they can afford to pay.
The best way for seniors’ to prevent credit card problems is better education. As a consumer, you need to know how your credit card and your credit card company works since these two are potential enemies if taken for granted. You should be aware that there are late fees, interests and other charges that come with your credit card and it can also make or break you, if you are not careful. You can use it, but think twice before doing so.
Like stated earlier, to avoid paying double the amount you actually owed, read fine prints before signing anything with your credit card company. Do not hesitate to ask questions like your payment due, interest rates, late charges and everything else which will be added to the principal amount you will owe upon usage.
Here’s a tricky one: LATE FEES. Did you know how many oblivious people fell to this tricky due date and end up paying late fees? I did so, many times over. Once, I got a mail from the credit card company saying that there’s a 3-day extension to my due date and I actually believed that this will last forever. Of course I was wrong, this extension was for a limited time only and even if I did pay on the exact date, I still got late charges just because I paid with a check. See? You try to be a good citizen and pay your bills on time only to get tricked. Nasty.
If you find yourself in the same situation, call the credit card company and complain. Sometimes they waive late charges if you have a good credit standing with them and try to be nice when talking to them so they will give in to your request. To avoid late charges, it is best to pay your bills twice a month or if you can, try to pay up a week before your due date. You can also pay your bills by phone if you will not be able to personally go to the bank and make the payments although some credit card companies charge for it at around $15 or so.
Your credit card comes with user’s conditions and restrictions. Review them once in a while, just to freshen up your memory. As much as possible, keep one to two credit cards to avoid too much complication in maintaining more than enough. Moreover, avoid credit cards with “universal default” clauses because it allows your credit card company to increase rates without informing you first.
At best, pay all purchases you made each month. If this is not possible, the next best thing to do is pay at least an amount higher than your minimum due indicated in the billing statement and pay off balances as soon as possible to avoid accumulation of fees and charges. Plus, whatever you do, DO NOT disturb your nest egg. However, if you are nearing your retirement age, clear all debts before retiring to avoid combination of medical bills and credit card bills from rocking your boat.
Senior’s mental health is reportedly the most difficult to diagnose of all ages which, most often than not, results to late diagnosis and delayed help and treatment. This is because depression with seniors is often mistaken with the natural process of aging itself and therefore, ignored.
The most common sign of mental illness is depression and there are many contributing factors which can dramatically increase levels of stress and depression in seniors like diseases, health problems, retirement, death and social life. These emotions are quite common to a living person no matter what age he’s in making it hard to separate senior’s mental state to that of a normal person.
We can only identify the signs correctly if we are well-educated with the matter at hand. When seniors are depressed, they tend to keep problems to themselves, keeping others at bay thus they became silent, withdrawn and sullen. During these times, most of them usually find refuge with alcohol and medications to somewhat ease the pain, both are known to be addictive with numerous side effects to boot. The number one cause of depression to seniors is their physical health. Deteriorating body state can change a happy man in a snap, creating a phase of confusion, fear and pain, both emotionally and physically.
Sudden lifestyle changes can alter a fairly contented man to an irritated, nonchalant individual. Considering that his once active, social and well-traveled life has quickly turned into a “trap” of limited range of motion, caregivers and lower income, surely there will be one case of depression abound. These unfortunate situations never fail to dramatically affect a senior’s emotional and mental health.
While Alzheimer’s disease is rumored to be a senior’s natural mental illness, studies have shown that this disease is not a normal part of the aging process. Although one significant risk factor of the said disease is age, we cannot disregard the link that this disease is found to be a result of some lifestyle factors such as smoking and eating fatty foods. That being said, it should be noted that a senior’s behavior stays pretty much the same until he experiences some life changing incidents.
Some of the common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are memory loss, problems with language, does not recognize time and place, misplaced things, childlike behavior, mood swings, personality changes, and passive outlook in life. Almost all the symptoms mentioned, you can find in a non-Alzheimer person especially if it is still on the early stages. So it is best to check with doctors regularly to avoid late diagnosis.
However, if Alzheimer’s is out of the question already, there are ways to avoid inflicting stress to seniors’ life. By avoiding stress, you will be able to live and enjoy your life to the fullest. Here are some ways to ease stress:
When we notice imperfection brought about aging, the first thing that comes in mind is how to improve it. As humans, we seek perfection. Nowadays, there are ways to restore youthful physical appearances for seniors since they are widely accepted now than ever before. Some of them provide dramatic results while others come with drastic side effects as well.
Like I said, there are ways. There are two types of cosmetic procedure: the invasive and non-invasive. For braver seniors demanding results now, the invasive cosmetic procedures are for you. Take note, invasive or surgical procedures should be done in hospitals for your safety, or at the very least, a reputable clinic licensed to do these kinds of procedures.
Droopy breast are restored to its firm and perky glory by breast augmentation. This surgical procedure involves the use of breast implants to make the breast fuller while breast lift or mastopexy is when excess skin is removed to tighten breast tissues. This procedure will enhance the shape and support of the breast. Breast reduction on the other hand, removes excess breast tissue to make the breast appear proportioned to the body. Liposuction is done to remove unwanted fat from different parts of the body. Tummy tucks are also amongst the popular surgical procedures done around the abdominal area.
Aside from the breast, signs of aging are visible in the face as well. Face and neck lifts are done to correct loose, sagging skin around the facial area. Eyelid lifts are for drooping eyelids commonly found in seniors. Puffy, loose eyebags are also repaired during this procedure. Another procedure done around the eye area is the brow lift which eliminates appearances of wrinkles in the brow and forehead. Rhinoplasty is done to change the shape or size of your nose and this is very popular across all ages. Chin augmentation is also popular to seniors since facial bones tend to shrink with age. With chin augmentation, the underlying facial features are fully enhanced.
Seniors go for cosmetic procedures for varying reasons, both men and women. With many options to choose from, clearly this is a very appealing venue to change the way we look and feel. For hesitant seniors, try non-invasive cosmetic procedures since they also offer immediate results, shorter recovery time and lower cost than surgical ones. These procedures are usually done around the facial area and involve as little as injections and minor peeling treatments.
Collagen injections plump up the facial skin for a smoother, youthful appearance while Botox injections paralyze the facial muscle to prevent lines from appearing on the face. Microdermabrasions are for suctioning off dead skin cells and debris from the face. These harmful particles are usually the ones clogging our pores. Dermabrasion is applied when you need to resurface your skin by scraping the outer layer thus encouraging new layer of the skin to grow. This same principle is also used in laser skin resurfacing which removes wrinkles, age spots, moles, tattoos and warts. For unwanted hairs, laser hair removal is the way to go.
Seniors can experiment with these options whether surgical or non-surgical procedures as long as their health permits them. However, you should do some legwork first in choosing the right clinic for you because in this field, there are plenty of scammers not licensed to do these things on human bodies. Also, government plans such as Medicard and Medicaid do not cover these kinds of procedure. Do check your wallet before deciding since some of them are costly.
When age is associated with poor health and degeneration, I take offense. For me, it is more of a judgment than factual call from younger people who would not know the difference. Maybe, and that is just maybe, if some senior will actually tell me these myths are true then I would consider but right now, there are all myths and they have been busted!
Basically, these myths were broken if the question lies in the natural process of aging alone. In reality, diseases commonly found in seniors are the ones making them weak and frail, unable to cope with their daily living demands. But, if a senior is fairly healthy, there is no reason for him not to live longer and live life to the fullest just like any other living adults.
Now that the kids are out of the house, there’s no stopping a senior’s sex life anymore. Gone are the days when you have to snatch a little time for sex in between obligations and restrictions. It was even reported that seniors’ sex lives improve as they get old since there is more time to spend together without too much distractions. This is somewhat different from what younger people used to think about seniors and their sex lives.
At any age bracket, sex is important in maintaining good relationship with your partner. Seniors may not be hardcore but they surely are hot too! Overall health, right orientation and financial stability contribute immensely with the change in attitude for seniors. They are more liberated and open-minded now, unlike the prehistoric days when seniors’ sex is taboo. Let’s just say, seniors today are more comfortable with their bodies than ever before. They consider sexual activities as natural part of aging and not something to be embarrassed about. If you are not one of these lucky seniors but would very much like to join in the fun, here are some tips on how to improve your senior sex life:
Seniors’ sex life should not be restrained just because it is something expected with age. If you enjoy sex, there is no need to slow down. For seniors, sex is not something you do for lust anymore. This is something they share with their partner emotionally and physically. It may not be as often as you used to but love will still be there no matter what.
There’s no stopping summer! Probably, as early as now, your kids are planning a little family outing with you and your grandkids or perhaps, your partner is already preparing for a honeymoon getaway in some romantic island where nobody can disturb your escapades. Whether this is something planned or spur-of-the-moment breakout, you will have to get down to details at some point specifically how to cover expenses while traveling. Sure, seniors won’t run out of options paying for their tracks but it can get confusing at times.
There are many different payment methods available to seniors especially if you have a good credit standing. Not quite a problem for many seniors since they know how to handle their finances very well. Seniors just need to decide what suits them best since all options are faced with their own pros and cons.
Traveling is fun, especially if spent with loved-ones but they tend to be costly hence you prepare. Not having enough money to spend around means your vacation is compromised and will only leave you feeling unsatisfied which defeats the purpose of your vacation all together. To prevent this from happening, you must review your options carefully and plan ahead.
Bringing cash to trips is the most convenient since cash is very acceptable anywhere in the world. This will also come in handy with places where there are no ATMs and banks available for your convenience. But, we all know that cash poses a great security risk to travelers and it can sometimes put you in a life threatening situation. Also, if you lose your cash, it can never be replaced.
Credit cards are the next best thing from cash providing maximum security and convenience which your cash could not give. Credit cards can also be used to reserve hotels and rent cars, pay for your food, entrance and just about anything. You can also use these cards for cash advances for noncredit card situations. They are accepted by many merchants worldwide. Seemed perfect right? But like they say, nothing is perfect. Credit cards are the usual target of scammers and unscrupulous individuals who will try to steal your credit card information and use it at your expense. So you have to be extra careful when using these things and never let it out of your sight. Also, you need to notify your issuing bank before traveling to avoid suspension of credit card when you need it most. You also have to check expiry dates and clean up your credit standing first.
Seniors also have the option to avail debit cards, traveler’s check, and prepaid credit cards among others. These are much safer than those two noted above but they can be very restricting. Debit cards are safe since nobody wants to steal debit cards, unless they thought it was a credit card. You can also use them anywhere just like your regular credit card and you can control your travel spending since you assign a certain limit to the debit card. However, you need to notify your issuing bank before leaving and cash advances are not allowable. Traveler’s checks are secure enough but they are expensive while prepaid travel cards require activation which comes in high fees.
A combination of two options will provide you a much stronger safety net for your traveling expenses so if one of them failed, the other one should work. Just remember to be safe and secure all the time so you will have a great vacation with no money hassles.
Nursing home is different from Intensive Care Unit where medical services are given to patients round the clock. Nursing home can also be called as skilled nursing facility, skilled nursing unit or rest home, all of which is a type of residence for individuals needing special care and assistance in their daily living activities. Sudden decline in physical or mental abilities also call for a nursing home care.
Nursing home is a very general term and has different levels or degree of service depending on the patient’s needs. In general, this is a place where people who require nursing care and rehabilitation go to. Usually, nursing homes are for elderly citizens who are not capable of living alone anymore but some homes accept younger adults with mental or physical disabilities as well. While admitted to a nursing home, seniors will receive physical, occupational and rehabilitative therapies comfortably within the home’s parameters.
A licensed nurse on duty 24 hours a day is mandatory to all nursing homes and there should be a registered nurse every shift each day to ensure proper health monitoring of patients within their care. Modes of payment acceptable are Medicare, Medicaid, private payment and private insurance. Your payment should include services of nurses, nursing aides and assistants, all rehabilitative therapies for the patient, social workers to monitoring emotional and psychiatric status of the patient, recreational facilities, and of course, board and lodging.
Before, nursing homes were hospital-like in nature but after careful evaluation of its effect to seniors’ disposition and health, certain steps were taken to improve nursing homes. Today, they adapt a home-like atmosphere and taken a more personal approach in dealing with their wards. Some homes allow seniors to bring their pets with them while staying in the facilities. This method drives away the feeling of loneliness and homesickness that most seniors tend to develop. Because of this, seniors dramatically improve healthwise.
Prior to seniors’ admission, your physician should evaluate your needs by overall physical examination and will therefore, forward all necessary health records and instructions to the nursing home. This information will be used by the nursing home as reference for monitoring your health and well-being. This information includes treatment, medication, special diet and therapy. It will also determine what type of services you will need in a nursing home.
Often times, a social worker will assist you in choosing the right nursing home for you but it will also help tremendously if you can personally pick and arrange your nursing home of choice since you will be the one living in this facility. You can either ask referrals from your doctor and friends or do some little legwork by picking up nursing home brochures and studying them. It is also best to personally visit each one of the nursing homes you are interested with to have a better feel of the place. Moreover, this will help you decide what suits you best.
Whether you are searching for the right nursing home for you or for your loved-one, there are things you must consider like: the proximity of the place from your own home and the hospital. This should be close enough to both so your family can visit you anytime and you can also be taken to the hospital if the need arises; the facility size and number of patients against the number of staff are also important since these demographics will give you the idea how well the service is; the overall cost of the service including optional charges and how you will pay for these services. To avoid getting confused with all the shopping around, it is best to visit nursing homes with your primary caregiver.
It’s not like seniors want to but yes, they tend to be scammers’ target because of seniors’ trusting nature. Seniors were brought up by their generation to be trusting and polite. They were expected to act accordingly by their parents. Those were the days when doors were held open for strangers and honest answers were thrown to questions. Something this generation would not dream of teaching their kids for all the evilness of today’s society. But, like they say, it is really hard to uproot something that has been imbibed for years, taking from seniors’ stand point.
Scammers chase the last generation of Americans who were taught to trust one another since they are easy and can be bullied. The most popular route of these fraudulent acts are mails, whether snail mails or electronic mails and have different varieties to choose from such as Medicare, Social Security, investments and insurances scams. Crooked schemes like these play on seniors’ vulnerability and often take advantage of their physical and mental health, factors that are age-related and cannot be avoided.
Mails are not our outmost concern here, since scammers do knock on seniors’ doors and were often invited in. This often puts seniors to physical vulnerability even before they realize the consequences of their actions. Moreover, scammers are not always strangers, they can also be someone you trust for a long time and they come in different guises.
So why seniors? It is because more often than not, seniors prepared well for their retirement. They saved for rainy days and they have nest egg in case of emergency. They have assets to last them for 20 more years and still have plenty to go around. Polite seniors often have difficulties in hanging up or saying no to persistent callers, much less to unrelenting swindlers. These traits are well-known to scammers and they are on the usual hunt for susceptible individuals.
According to FBI, seniors are very attractive targets because they are less likely to report a fraud for varied reasons. Also, older citizens often make poor witnesses to scams and are usually poor in remembering dates, time and description of the scammer. It was also found out that, elderly victims usually denies the fact that they were indeed scammed.
Actually, we don’t have to be weary of every John Does we meet everyday, just remember the golden rule, never to give valuable information about yourself, not to anyone, not ever, under any circumstances. Remember that your private data are kept by appropriate offices and they don’t have to ask you for it if in case they need it. They can access it anytime they want to without asking for your permission so be careful with individuals posing as an agent for some offices requiring your personal information. Better yet, hang-up as soon as you smell rat. These unscrupulous people will not take offense anyway so don’t bother being polite.
However, if you doubt your own memory to remember important things and you need to share it with someone else, you just have to choose your candidates wisely to avoid unforeseen circumstances. A little file organizing goes a long way and will prove to be very useful for future reference. Take it to a safe place and tell someone you trust where to find it. You can also apply for a safe deposit box with banks for your files’ safekeeping. These boxes are not easily accessible by anyone else but you and in case someone else attempts to, he or she will be required to present a personal identification and an authorization letter from you. Safe enough to get you out of trouble.
Gone are the days when seniors have to read and reread manuals of modern electronic gadgets to point of frustration. Even younger people who are not “techie” enough for today’ current technologies tend to get lost with all these hard-to-figure codes and rules hence minor discomfort which seniors have to endure just to keep up with prevalent lifestyle.
For seniors, smaller phones mean prescriptive glasses to be able to read those buttons and faster phones mean it cannot be used at all. This is a very daunting task for seniors to conquer especially if they were so adapted with yesteryear’s way of life when phones were used only for talking and nothing else. But today, these electronic equipments not only became sophisticated but complex with added services and improvements which are quite unnecessary to seniors’ simple needs.
What seniors need is something to connect them with their loved-ones without compromising their sanity. This is really important so they won’t feel lonely and isolated from their family especially those living away from them such as grandchildren, cousins, and friends. Broadbands are okay since they provide real-time connection but, again, they have to tinker with the computer first which is quite an impossible feat for some. Research shows that the most accepted mode of contact for senior citizens are telephones, which is why they prefer using video phones than complicated cellular phones.
With video phones, they have the privilege to talk and see their loved-ones at the same time. It’s like having them beside you even if they are miles away from where you are. Video phones give the warm feeling which seniors often miss and of course, with video phones, you avoid miscommunication since you can see their faces quite clearly. Surely, this is the next best thing for seniors to be with their families.
With features like advanced digital cameras for clearer video imaging and 7” wide screen, even the smallest detail will not escape your eyes. All you need is a phone adapter and high-speed internet connection which you plug into the video phone and you are on your way to endless conference with relatives you haven’t talked for a while. No need to sweat out details, these video phones are easy to operate and there’s not a lot configurations involved.
Even health care providers approved of video phones since they are practical. It also helps them to know what exactly is wrong with patients living outside of their facilities. Seniors with hearing impairment can also benefit with video phones since they can relay visual messages directly to the person they are talking to.
Regular phones pose a great challenge for some seniors since age-related conditions may interfere with both speech and comprehension such as hearing loss and diminished vision. Dialing and voice prompts are quite difficult and confusing for some senior citizens. With video phones, you can instantly connect and engage with your family for a well-meaning conversation and catching up. Check one out now!
