Let’s Get Physical!

Exercise is important for all ages, especially for seniors. Around this time, a senior’s body undergoes some dramatic changes while the body’s metabolism is gradually slowing down. All of which are age related occurrences which we cannot interfere. A healthy metabolism is essential to our body since this process sorts out everything we eat and breaks them down for energy. Metabolism also helps the body absorb nutrients. If our body’s metabolism slows down, the body could no longer function to its optimum rate.

Being active boosts up the body’s metabolism by making the heart and lungs work harder. Moderately intense exercise will improve cardiovascular functions and stimulates your metabolism as well. In fact, staying active will help you in keeping your strength so you can live independently and have enough energy to do activities that are important to you. Sweating out will eliminate toxins from further damaging your body thus preventing diseases such as cancer. Lifestyle diseases like diabetes and obesity can be kept under control if seniors maintain a fairly active life. Exercise can also raise certain mood-enhancing hormone levels which were found to lift up your mood and reduce depression. Not only that, when you start seeing some results, your self confidence will soar up.

For seniors, there are four types of exercise which you can try. Endurance exercises are done to build up your body’s energy. Examples of endurance exercises are walking, running, swimming and biking. A good 30 minutes thrice a week is enough and you can gradually increase resistance if you are not experiencing any difficulty. On the other hand, strength workouts are for building and improving muscle tone. Well-toned muscles will prevent falls which cause bone breakage to seniors. Yoga and Pilates are stretching exercise which can help stiff muscles loosen up. These exercises can also help you stabilize your balance for better agility and flexibility.

Senior exercise should not hurt you. This also applies to all age brackets. A little soreness or discomfort is okay but pain is definitely out of the question. If there is pain, try to contact your doctor at once to assess if you did some damage to your body.

Seniors who have been fairly active will not have problems doing moderate to intense workouts since their bodies are more or less, adapted to it but for beginners, we should start slow. Again, you can gradually increase intensity if your body permits you to do so. Don’t forget that breathing is important while exercising since your heart and lungs are hard at work. To prevent injuries, wear appropriate protective gears for your chosen sport and drink lots of water as well.

Working out is fun and it’s a great way to socialize and meet other people. As soon as your body adopts its new lifestyle, you won’t have any more problems with soreness and some minor body aches. Just give it some time to do so. However, if the pain persists for more than a day, contact your physician at once. Better yet, consult him before doing any strenuous activities to avoid getting into trouble. Remember, any new symptoms you experience should be discussed with your doctor. Minor discomforts such as shortness of breath and chest pains could signify something your doctor should know. Also, it is not wise to join workout programs if you are having some joint swelling, hernia or you just had a surgery. While exercising is good for seniors, it can also worsen some health conditions if not properly guided. Aside from consulting your doctor, look for specialized fitness instructors for seniors that can help you with your concerns and will prepare fitness programs to suit your needs.

Wrinkles and gray hair are just examples of natural aging process but this is something you see outside of your body. There are certain things which undergo changes within as well, whether emotional or physical. That is why it is always advisable for seniors, ages 50 and above to go for regular, routine checkups with their doctors even if you believe you are healthy and active. It is done to prevent unforeseen health risks from damaging our bodies.

Cardiovascular diseases are more common in men. In fact, heart disease is the leading health threat for the gents and it usually starts earlier than any other diseases. The most common cause of cardiovascular disease is your lifestyle and habits especially if you are predisposed to this disease meaning if you have hereditary tendencies running through your blood. If you are having difficulties with your heart, try to quit smoking. Smoking can cause your blood to thicken and clot which can clog up your heart. It can also harden your arteries, losing their elasticity. Overtime, your heart will work even harder resulting to high blood pressure.

For women, their common enemy is osteoporosis or bone loss. This usually occurs after menopause. Bear in mind that this is a common phenomenon for all humans since maximum bone mass reaches its peak at around 25-35 years old and declines after that which will result to gradual loss of density making the bones weaker and susceptible to fracture. To prevent this, you should start taking calcium supplements and join fitness activities. Exercising is the best way to maintain your strength and slow down your bone’s aging process. You should start early on.

Memory loss is common to seniors. As we grew old, we experience gradual brain cell loss thus making our memory less efficient than yesterday. Memory loss is also obtained in instances of alcoholism, infection and repeated head trauma but it is a natural occurrence when we get older. Adequate daily dose of folic acid and B vitamins will somewhat alleviate the symptoms. Also, mind exercises such as crossword puzzles and Sudoku will help tremendously in keeping your mind healthy and active. Avoid mind stresses and practice relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.

If you find your self having some difficulties in sleeping, then you are not alone since it was found that seniors do have at least one sleeping disorder under their belts. There are many known factors which affect a seniors’ goodnight sleep. For one, due to hormonal changes, our bodies secrete less of sleeping hormone melatonin. Melatonin is our body’s own sleep timer which signals the brain when it’s time to sleep making us feel sleepy and drowsy. Without it, the brain would never know when to send sleep signals to the body. Health conditions also aggravate sleeping patterns especially if you have diabetes and you need to make several trips to the bathroom during the night. Anxiety also interferes with your sleep. When having some sleeping problems, examine your medications closely. Some medications prevent you from sleeping, ask your doctor about your medications’ side effect and let him know at once if you suspect one.

It is but normal for our bodies to undergo some certain changes depending on how we live our lives. What’s important is how we take care of our bodies to prevent or delay natural occurrences from happening so it will not interfere with our daily living. It is most recommended for seniors to stop all harmful vices such as alcohol drinking and smoking and start cleaning up by engaging in a healthy diet everyday. Regular checkup is necessary since it can provide a better health foresight of your body.

Living Alone With Pets

Actually, some seniors prefer living with their pets than sharing their home with someone else. This is quite understandable since pets are known for their unconditional love and loyalty to their masters, no matter what. Seniors who live with their pets are found to live longer than those who do not have one and animals prove to be very beneficial in maintaining a healthy lifespan and also in recovering from illnesses.

Pets can bring out nurturing instincts and boost our confidence level. Studies have shown that seniors who live with their pets suffer minimal stress in their daily lives. Faced in stressful situations, pet owners are calmer thus deciding in a better perspective than others.

Pets are great companions for seniors. Your pet will also encourage healthy, active lifestyle since it will require you to go out for walks. Not only that, pets especially dogs provide some sense of security and comfort to its owner.

Golden years can be very difficult and lonely for some especially those who lost a partner. A companion animal can alleviate these emotions just by being there for their owners and diverting their attention to small tasks which demand immediate reaction such as feeding and caring for their pet. Small physical tasks enable owners to be active and perform other normal activities of daily living. In short, owning a pet is like having a diversion from loneliness giving you self assurance and sense of belongingness.

Owning a pet entails some responsibilities as well. If you are planning to have one, it is best to look for older pets than to contend with a younger one. Older pets, more or less, understand their owners and they are less feisty. You can find submissive, older pets in shelters which you can adopt. You should also make room for your pet and if you are renting, be sure to check with your landlord if they permit pets inside their house. Smaller space means smaller pets to avoid bumping with each after every move.

Secondly, you should consider your own intentions in getting a pet. If you are looking for a companion, your best bets are dogs and cats whereas if you just want something to look at, birds and fishes are the way to go. Talk with your friendly veterinarian for tips on how to choose the right breed for you according to your lifestyle and living conditions.

Before bringing your chosen pet home, a quick visit to the veterinarian’s clinic for a complete physical won’t hurt. You should do this to make sure your pet is healthy thus avoiding unforeseen problems. Your veterinarian will check your pet for fleas and other underlying diseases which can cause major problems in the long run.

Sometimes seniors hesitate in getting an animal companion just because they are doubtful if they can care for them should unexpected health crisis attacks. This should not be a problem if addressed beforehand. There are pet sitting services that will provide some TLC to your pet while you are away. However, if the situation forced you to move into an adult-care facility, it is good to know that some of them allow pets to move in with you so you can still be with your pet.

Truly, owning a pet is a rewarding experience by itself. Making friends with other pet owners are made easy. Pets can benefit you emotionally, in a way that humans cannot and they don’t ask for too much, just some love and affection which you can surely give them. Best of all, pets never abandon their masters. They are made that way and they will stay that way.

For outdoorsy-type of date, you might want to try mild physical activities first like golfing, bowling, boating and kayaking. These activities will divert you away from awkward moments since most likely, you will be talking about the boat and the water. This is best for those who have no idea what to talk about during first dates.

Romance is never too old for anybody. We are all entitled to love and be loved. As seniors, we have the right to enjoy ourselves and find the perfect partner for us since we already played our vital part for the community. Dating is fun and it gives you a sense of purpose. If you are just starting out in the dating arena after sometime of married life, it is best to go out with friends first or someone you are familiar with, just to test the waters. This way, you stay safe since you know who you are going out with and will also eliminate the possibility of quiet, dull moments. Dates don’t have to be romantic always. You can also date just because you want to go out or you just need to see other people. Senior dating should be painless as possible so let go of all that’s haunting you and let’s have some fun!
