Judging by the number of types of diabetes, you’ll know that there will be two or three times the number of possible causes. While a large number of diabetics have developed the condition by having a not-so-healthy lifestyle, there are some who are just plain predisposed to it—these are the unlucky ones who, even if they have spent their whole lifetime avoiding sweets, will still get the condition, eventually.
There are many factors for diabetes, one of which is your genes. However, diabetes can be prevented before it happens, you just have to be aware of the things that might trigger it. What you should bear in mind though, when dealing with diabetes, is that you need to prevent or delay onset since once you enter this stage, there will be no turning back:
• Load up on fiber. Fiber is good for preventing diabetes as it is a known substance that lowers blood glucose plus it is good for your heart as well as your digestive system. Aside from that, fiber is good when trying to maintain weight as it is carbohydrate but won’t leave you bloated as it flushes out of your system completely.
• Maintain an ideal weight. Not only an ideal weight will make you feel confident about yourself but it also makes it easier for the body to control its blood glucose. However, drastic or severe diet is not recommended if you are trying to keep diabetes at bay as it may cause your insulin levels to go haywire.
• Exercise. Staying active will help your body burn excessive sugar in your blood and for the body to use them as fuel. Best of all, exercising will help tone your sagging body parts, taking 10 years off your calendar!
• Go for Mediterranean diet. This diet is low in fat and high in fiber so it is good for the heart too. There should be lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet, plus unrefined or whole grains. As for protein, lean meats such as fish and poultry would do. Red meat on the other hand, should be keep at a minimum.
• Get tested. It is important to always monitor your sugar levels if you are predisposed to diabetes or already in the prediabetes stage wherein your sugar levels are higher than normal but are not quite qualified to be considered as diabetes.
• Educate yourself. Awareness is important. Knowing what is right and what is wrong for your body will help you prevent diabetes from happening.
• Keep your heart healthy. Your heart and your sugar levels are in close association so it is important to keep your heart healthy too.
