What better way to start your morning than a cup of coffee, ink stain on your fingertips from the morning papers and the smell of morning dew outside your porch? I’d say priceless!
There was a time when coffee was considered as the bad guy. My daughter used to shout at me for having 2-3 cups of coffee a day. That was also the time when I kicked her out of the house, well not for standing between me and my cup of coffee but I just thought she needed the boot to jump start her adult life and that was exactly what I was there for! Long story short, I have learned to be a closet-coffee drinker which some called during those awful years as the coffee-junkie, like I needed AA intervention or something.
Admit it, coffee is addicting and I tell you now, I was one of the million people who jumped up and down when a study showed it to be actually beneficial to our health when taken in moderation. Much more when science dispelled the scary facts coffee once came with. I never liked decaffeinated; I consider it as a lame excuse for drinking coffee so for all you coffee lovers, here are some more reasons why you shouldn’t drop the habit:
• It reduces your risk for developing diabetes. ONLY if you skip the sugar or keep it at a minimum, that is. However, taking coffee per se was found out to help lessen your risk for developing diabetes as it makes glucose control easier for the body.
• Coffee lowers your risk for breast cancer. While this finding doesn’t oppose the earlier studies that anything roasted can cause cancer, coffee, especially if you are not prone to breast cancer doubles your protection. On the other hand, coffee can delay breast cancer development for those who are genetically-proned to having the condition.
• It won’t increase your risk for heart attack. Contrary to popular notion, drinking coffee won’t cause heart problems especially if you are drinking in moderation. However, if you are feeling a skip-beat-skip right after drinking coffee, then you might want to lessen your intake.
• It is a proven anti-oxidant. If you have been drinking coffee for only-God-knows-when, then your body is keeping free radicals in line and possibly not allowing it to do any damage on your cells.
• Boosts mental clarity. It is so frustrating to be in a room with a group of people and you are expected to be in your sharpest only to find yourself struggling to focus right? Coffee gives short term mental clarity boost, more of a jolt, enough to keep you awake and alert just when you need it the most.
