Retiring may have its perks such as becoming a happier elderly. This is according to a recent study that shows millions of seniors who are jobless and gave up on job search are happier. If you are 55 years and older you may not find it easy to find work and could be unemployed for long. You may find it impossible to get a job compared to your younger counterparts who are still youthful and energetic.
Hanging up your gloves may be the only thing to do than encounter unfortunate job searches. Those who have not worked for over 25 weeks found quitting improved their overall happiness and outlook.
The social expectations do little to deter some older people who are happy not to work any more. Study shows they are content and take unemployment positively instead of trying to meet society expectations. They are happy to refer to themselves as retired rather than employed.
Other than expectations, they are not subjected to stress, frustrations and a lack of money. Notwithstanding that as discouraged workers, it becomes harder to meet a budget. You do not feel a decline in your well-being and fret over keeping up with the neighbors as well rather than their expectations.
On the other hand, findings of the team of researchers in Berlin also discovered that seniors who made the switch early may not be as happy as they were when working. Even as they receive their benefits and have no working days they still experience the feeling of inadequacy in meeting society standards.
The German team of economics researchers acquired the conclusion from the study that was conducted by following discouraged workers for 15 years. The workers were followed from employment age to when they called it quits. Many seniors in employment are a valuable asset due to their wealth of experience. But once they lose their jobs it becomes difficult to get back into the employment scene.
Some discouraged workers no longer try to conform to the society’ expectations and keep up with their neighbors for they have an identity. However, seniors who still have the need to work may not find the study comforting.
Once you accept you are retired and not temporarily you may find it easier to live your life. The study shows it will make you happier to file for benefits than to keep seeking employment to meet personal, social and environmental beliefs.
