You have been living alone with your pet for quite some time now. By now, you must admit, your pet has been a great help in nursing you back to life and you owe him a lot for staying by your side through your darkest moment. Now that you are stepping out of the dark, are you leaving your friend behind?

Of course not; anywhere you go, he does too. In fact, a survey conducted by a pet product company revealed that more than half, or should I say almost all, of seniors prefer traveling with their own pets in tow. Whatever reasons these older people may have, they surely are ready for some road trip action with their pets as soon as the weather permits them to do so.

Your pets are the best travel companion ever especially if he is well-trained and very comfortable with you. He provides the sense of security and the right amount of companionship; surely you will have lots of fun traveling with your pet. But before you engage in “the trip of your lifetime” with your beloved pet, you may want to check out some important details first such as health and permits.

You should also take note that most pets live with familiarity. This means your dog could react differently and unexpectedly especially if this is your pet’s first time to travel out of the house and to unfamiliar territories. You may want to secure your pet’s proof of health through your veterinarian since this serves as their pass to some hotels and other public places and areas. While you’re at it, it is best to consult your vet if your pet can or cannot travel with you and update vaccinations as well.

Take time to consider the type of trip you are embarking in; if it’s pet conducive. This should be safe and fun for your pets as well and not for you alone. Moreover, bear in mind that some countries do not allow pets and will put them in quarantine at once especially for international travels. Be sure to check these areas first to avoid inconveniences from happening; on the other hand, there are cities which encourage pet travels.

Regarding obedience and temperament, it is very important that your pet knows how to socialize with people and obeys basic commands from you. To test his reaction to people, bring him out for a walk then gradually introduce him to public places such as parks and market; if he behaves well within these parameters then most likely, he will be able to handle the trip very well.

Your pets can get lost during your trip so it is best to come prepared for it. A simple collar and pet ID tag can save you and your pet if he somehow ends up in a local shelter. Keep him on leash while walking so he won’t get distracted and dash away from you. Try to maintain him in this arrangement up until he properly adjusts with this new environment.

If your current situation does not permit you to carry your pet along during the trip, you may want to check out dog care facilities around your area. Usually, they have programs made for your dog while you’re away on a trip and they can make your dogs comfortable as can be.

Senior Pass

Have you heard about the senior pass? Well, if you love parks, US citizen, and you are 62 years old or way above, then grab this affordable lifetime pass made especially for seniors!

This affordable pass allows you to access recreation areas managed by US Federal agencies. Plus the senior pass also provides great discounts to some amenities which will normally require you to pay fees such as camping, site tours and boating.

These little babies cost $10 each and they last for a lifetime. You can purchase one with participating government agencies such as Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Forest Service, and National Park Service. All you need to do is personally present yourself to issuing agencies, bring $10 and some proof of identification like driver’s license, birth certificate, or anything that is government-issued documents.

However, fees vary from one site to another so it is best to inquire to the site first before going to avoid inconveniences along the trip and I heard you need to purchase the pass again if you lost them or if they were stolen from you so you really need to look after them closely.

Senior pass is very convenient and will come in handy for seniors who love strolling down national parks and just be one with nature. This is also a great way to enjoy a family outing without breaking the bank. Seniors are allowed to access most of national parks and lands from Alaska all the way to Florida. Senior Pass is part of the American the Beautiful- Natural Parks and Federal Recreational Lands pass program wherein they offer different kinds of passes for different needs. This program grants US residents to enjoy their national museums, parks and lands.

The good part is, this pass will not only benefit you but your companions as well. Your pass will allow you, three of your adult companions and one private car to enter the premises without any extra charge. Like stated earlier, discounts are given for any other amenities you may want to avail during the trip and mind you, discounts can go up to 50% if you are lucky!

Other available passes which you can avail through same agencies are access pass for people with disability problems, one year pass for adults under 62 years of age, and free pass for volunteers.

This pass will prove to be very beneficial to seniors considering the money they will be able to save and the number of parks they are allowed to access.

Vacation indeed knows no boundaries. Well, any season would do just fine for seniors, just as long as we have time, energy and of course, money. Who says only college kids deserve spring breaks? We do to.

Speaking of college kids, seniors over 50 could also go broke sometimes. And like students, seniors also need to watch over their money while on vacation especially now that travel expenses are getting ridiculously high even for higher-income families. Everything has risen; from airfares, all the way down to the food we eat while vacationing and everyday it becomes tougher than yesterday. But, vacation is a vacation and chronic vacationers will find a way to make it possible!

This spring, it is highly recommended for seniors to try cruises. They are much more affordable than any other travel options in the market today. Although there might be some affordable airfare deals, seniors should take into consideration the overall cost of the trip, if and when they explore this venue, such as hotel, entrances and other stuff while cruises are all-in package. Also, cruises are both convenient and stress-free for traveling seniors.

Cruise liners offer lodging, meal tickets and entertainment while on board. Considering you don’t have to pay extra for all of these; that makes it more charming right? Of course, there will be additional offers which will require you to pay but that is entirely up to you if you want them or not such as spas, and classes. What’s more, some cruise liners give discounts to their senior customers ages 55 and up.

Seniors on cruise can enjoy island hopping—visiting one island to another, something that is quite impossible if you are traveling by air or by land, not to mention, costly. Cruises are also convenient for seniors since after a long day of walking and touring the island, coming back to the ship would be a welcome refuge for many.

You don’t have to bring a partner, single seniors are absolutely welcome. There are activities for singles on board which allow them to meet and greet other singles on the ship. This is a great way to socialize with other people while vacationing. And of course, seniors on honeymoon are also given their much needed privacy. Surely, anything goes aboard.

Cruise liners are now gearing more towards seniors. That only proves the fact that seniors remain as the number one vacationers across all generations and lately, cruises are becoming their perfect vacation choice due to the fact that cruises are hassle-free and very economical.

Home exchange or house swap is a great vacation alternative for seniors especially in hard economic times like this. Home exchange is fun and most of all, they are free. Home swapping is when you stay in someone else’s house while they stay in yours at the same time or at pre-arranged time depending on both parties’ arrangement. This vacation set up will benefit both families with reduced travel cost since it eliminates hotel accommodation fees and having to eat out all the time. Home swap provides all the comforts of home and luxury of experiencing other world outside of your comfort zone without having to pay an expensive tag.

Direct exchange is done if you and the exchanging party will simultaneously do the home swap meaning they will come to your house while you stay at theirs for the same period of time. The emerging trend today in home exchange is the nonsynchronized swap. Non-synchronized swap is when you go to their home at a pre-arranged time but they won’t necessarily stay at your house. Either they stay at someone else’s house or they stay put while you’re visiting. Second homes can also be exchanged instead of rented out for the holidays. You can also do some house-sitting while the family is away.

Aside from your house, you can opt to put your yacht, cruiser or vacation house up for swap. You can also look for a certain house feature like it’s proximity to the city central or places of interest. It doesn’t have to be an exact house type, just as long as the accommodation impresses both parties like a yacht for a cabin house or a studio type for a house with a pool. House swap is completely flexible when it comes to terms and stays.

Usually, home exchange is done over the internet but you can also directly arrange your own swaps with family and friends. Since internet offers broader audience, you can find millions of swappers all over the world and has then become a popular mode for home exchanges. There are home exchange organizations which offer search directories, guides and tips and also customer support for a fee, usually a membership fee. It is best to browse the site first before signing up with any of them. Plan ahead so you can choose the best exchange home for your trip.

Home exchange is best for seniors since this kind of arrangement is personal and friendly. They can greatly benefit by making new friends across the country and having the much-needed vacation all at the same time. It will also give you the best tips on where to eat and what places to visit as opposed to impersonal atmosphere your usual resort and hotels allow. Home swaps are also suggested for vacationing families and large groups instead of occupying several rooms in a hotel.

Before committing your house to a swap, check the other parties’ location, house area, number of rooms, and access to public transport. Make sure that you express concerns beforehand and set limits and responsibilities to both parties such as house occupancy and usage. Naturally enough, you should leave the house in a clean and good condition like you first found it; this is a form of courtesy to the house owner and a golden rule for home exchange.

The only downside of home exchange is that you cannot demand a refund or room change if you don’t like the place likewise there is no housekeeping to clean up the mess you made so you have to do it on your own. But hey, it’s free so a little compromise won’t hurt right? Think of it this way, if you want them to treat your house right, you should also accord the same respect.

There’s no stopping summer! Probably, as early as now, your kids are planning a little family outing with you and your grandkids or perhaps, your partner is already preparing for a honeymoon getaway in some romantic island where nobody can disturb your escapades. Whether this is something planned or spur-of-the-moment breakout, you will have to get down to details at some point specifically how to cover expenses while traveling. Sure, seniors won’t run out of options paying for their tracks but it can get confusing at times.

There are many different payment methods available to seniors especially if you have a good credit standing. Not quite a problem for many seniors since they know how to handle their finances very well. Seniors just need to decide what suits them best since all options are faced with their own pros and cons.

Traveling is fun, especially if spent with loved-ones but they tend to be costly hence you prepare. Not having enough money to spend around means your vacation is compromised and will only leave you feeling unsatisfied which defeats the purpose of your vacation all together. To prevent this from happening, you must review your options carefully and plan ahead.

Bringing cash to trips is the most convenient since cash is very acceptable anywhere in the world. This will also come in handy with places where there are no ATMs and banks available for your convenience. But, we all know that cash poses a great security risk to travelers and it can sometimes put you in a life threatening situation. Also, if you lose your cash, it can never be replaced.

Credit cards are the next best thing from cash providing maximum security and convenience which your cash could not give. Credit cards can also be used to reserve hotels and rent cars, pay for your food, entrance and just about anything. You can also use these cards for cash advances for noncredit card situations. They are accepted by many merchants worldwide. Seemed perfect right? But like they say, nothing is perfect. Credit cards are the usual target of scammers and unscrupulous individuals who will try to steal your credit card information and use it at your expense. So you have to be extra careful when using these things and never let it out of your sight. Also, you need to notify your issuing bank before traveling to avoid suspension of credit card when you need it most. You also have to check expiry dates and clean up your credit standing first.

Seniors also have the option to avail debit cards, traveler’s check, and prepaid credit cards among others. These are much safer than those two noted above but they can be very restricting. Debit cards are safe since nobody wants to steal debit cards, unless they thought it was a credit card. You can also use them anywhere just like your regular credit card and you can control your travel spending since you assign a certain limit to the debit card. However, you need to notify your issuing bank before leaving and cash advances are not allowable. Traveler’s checks are secure enough but they are expensive while prepaid travel cards require activation which comes in high fees.

A combination of two options will provide you a much stronger safety net for your traveling expenses so if one of them failed, the other one should work. Just remember to be safe and secure all the time so you will have a great vacation with no money hassles.

Seniors Travelling Light

It is not uncommon for seniors to travel because, they do travel a lot and that is what they do best. But let’s face it, when we travel, we would like to go as light as possible so we can carry our bags with ease to and fro. For gentlemen on board, this is not much of a problem since most of them can very well survive the vacation without so much of a fuss but really, they hate carrying that awfully heavy bag their partners bring to the trip. It cramps up the style and really, it hurts the back so bad.

On the other hand, this is quite a dilemma for the ladies. It is not entirely possible for them to fit everything they need in one small manageable bag. Hence, the ladies painstakingly organize and downsize everything they need to miniature sizes.

Whether you are traveling by plane, train or bus, packing light will provide you a better range of motion and you don’t actually need to bring everything else with you since you can buy them when you get to your destination. You just have to bring things that are quite necessary for your life such as your medications. Here are some more suggestions to make your trip even lighter without sacrificing your convenience:

1. Make a list of everything you will need and don’t lose this list. Refer to this list once more before leaving your home.

2. Buy personal care products in travel sizes to save space in the luggage. This is also done if you have special skin care needs and you are quite doubtful if there is such a product in your point of destination. Same goes for trips that will involve some days off the road.

3. If you are planning to go away for one week, bring 3 pieces of underwear, 1 pair of cotton socks and 1 pair of pantyhose then roll them up. These are the things you can wash while away or if you hate washing, you can buy disposable ones for the trip. Check with your hotel before flying in for guests’ washing options.

4. Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry one for formal occasion. It is always best to come prepared while comfies are for walking around without hurting yourself.

5. Bring 2 pairs of walking pants. For the ladies, Skirts are also allowed just as long as it can be mixed with the tops you brought along. For men, walking shorts are also welcomed. Just be sure they are within friendly colors of neutrals and roll them up to eliminate wrinkles.

6. All the necessary things that you think you will need while on the road, you should pack in a separate bag which you can carry around like a tote or a belt bag. This is to avoid rummaging around for your things when the need arises. These will include medications, prescriptions, eye glasses, snacks, maps, money, coins, cards, passports, boarding tickets, passes, books and others. Double check before leaving home.

7. If visiting someone far, you don’t have to personally hand them your gifts of love, you can opt to ship them ahead of you.

8. While shopping is fun, consider the current state of your bag before you accumulate things during a shopping spree and mind you, this is not for the ladies alone. If you need to buy something you cannot personally carry home, then let the store ship it directly back home. This is more ideal than contending with something larger than you right?

It is also best to consider your location when packing. This will give you an idea what to pack best and what to leave at home. Like for example, if you are going to Florida, most likely there will be beach dipping and water sports then it is wise to pack some swimsuits and flip flops. Things like that will give you a better perspective. Happy trip!
