Between family obligations, your lifelong obsession, and whatever is keeping your hands off your weekend relaxation, weekend off – and plan for actually having one – sounds more and more of a privilege than a right. It should not be as a study showed that we need our weekends to choose whatever we want to do and leave “working” to weekdays. Professor Richard Ryan did a study relating psychology and weekends. In his study he concluded that those who take weekends off are more well-rounded and productive than those who don’t – and they feel better regardless of age.

Remember that most illnesses are triggered by stress and working yourself to death without hope for a weekend break will surely push you to the edge – or even throw you off edge. Instead of feeling guilty and unproductive by taking your well-earned weekend off, think of it as an investment, a way to save your health as well as your sanity.
Working or nonworking, retired and otherwise, it is important to set aside your weekends to yourself and as much as possible, say “no” to work during these days. Here are some simple ways you can reclaim your weekends and actually enjoy it!
·         Reorganize your calendar. Clear your weekends off of any and all work-related entries, same goes for those you feel are obligations and not in any way beneficial to your well being such as your mom’s dental appointment or your grandkid’s piano lesson. These things can be scheduled during weekdays.
·         Avoid weekend deadlines. If you have to meet a deadline, make it Friday, or if that is not possible then go for Tuesday morning – Monday evening even but NEVER on Saturday and Sunday. Make this a habit.
·         Get all your tasks done within weekdays. This way you avoid doing things on weekends as well as getting rid of that dark cloud that hangs over your head when you opt to rest on weekends. When you know there’s nothing else to do, you’ll be able to enjoy your weekends more.
·         It should be “all about you”. Do whatever relaxes you. If your idea of a relaxing weekend is a good book out the porch or perhaps gardening with your spouse, then so be it. Don’t be too concerned if you weren’t able to plan a “great” out-of-town trip if you don’t really feel like it. The idea of a weekend off is not having any pressure on you at all and enjoying the day at your own phase.
·         Declare a “no-techie day”! Technology has indeed made our lives easier but it can also bring about unwanted stress. An email or a phonecall can easily unearth an emergency task or remind you of a last minute duty. Even if you don’t act on it immediately, it can easily bring back that black cloud of guilt and break the serenity of the weekend.

In this day and age, I must admit, finding the perfect match is oh-so easy. With the advent of technology, particularly social networking, you can find and interact with friends as often as you like. You can indeed connect with your family and friends even if you are too busy to actually sit down and browse the computer since most social networking sites have gone  mobile too—that is, they can be accessed using your mobile phones. You can do it in any way you want and in whatever position you deem fit. This, in a way, widens your horizons in such a way that “dating” someone from miles away is not anymore impossible however, for seniors like us who needs a good loving and a physically present partner, here are some ways to turn your supposedly virtual romance into a reality:

•    Find a dating site that caters to a specific group. Dating sites have themes, if you should know. This makes it easier for those who are interested in meeting people according to their interests. For example, if you belong to a certain religion, there are dating sites which list members of the same religion. Or perhaps a certain age bracket to make it easier for you to choose?
•    Browse through your friends list. If you are an active member of a social networking site, let say, Facebook, you’ll be amazed to hear that there are relationships formed there—and quite successfully at that. This is because your network is, more or less, people you know and it’s not at all impossible to rekindle an old flame from exchanges made in these sites.
•    Make friends, then partners. Not because you are of golden age, you need to chase them partners like crazy! If you make friends as priority then let the relationship bloom from there, it doubles the chances of it being successful than if you jumped from acquaintance to partners.
•    Attend an activity of mutual interest. At some point, your relationship with your virtual-potential lover must take the next level and that is seeing each other. First dates are the scariest, I say. However, if this will be done in such a way that you both won’t feel examined under a microscope then there’s no reason for you to feel uncomfortable at all.
•    If you are to meet, do it alone. This way there will be no distractions and more time to get to know each other. Just imagine how uncomfortable it would be to be sitting around trying to get your date’s attention while she’s busy chitchatting with a buddy she brought along.
•    Set aside your fears. Yes, interacting over the computer is quite different from an actual date but you have to set aside your fears and apprehensions to make it work.

If you’re a senior and you are currently residing in Australia, avail of this very beneficial service the Red Cross family is offering, the Telecross. The Telecross program is designed and developed by Australian Red Cross to assist older adults with mobility problems as well as those partially disabled individuals who are prone to accidents especially if without in-house caregivers or living alone. It also comes in handy for those cases wherein the referred person is receiving little or no family care. This is an ongoing service for more than 20 years now with estimated thousands of volunteers who patiently make those calls in time every day, 24/7.

Basically in a Telecross community program, volunteers call individuals assigned to them every morning to check them up and ask if there’s something in particular the receiving end needs. This is also done to ensure these individuals are safe and not needing any immediate medical help as of the moment. If and when the older adult requires some help, they are quickly referred to the proper authority to handle their needs. However, if the senior failed to pick up the call, an emergency team is alerted at once and a visit to the senior’s home is made. These calls are done according to specified time the receiving end sets—when it’s most convenient for them to take a call. This service can also be availed temporarily for those who won’t need the service for a long time; in such cases as caregiver in leave or the senior in question is migrating to other place soon.

Mostly, Telecross is offered for free but one can make a donation if he or she feels like it since the program also requires paid resources for it to continue working on. Registration is just a phone call away; you can refer yourself or anyone whom you wanted to receive such service. As soon as the quick registration is complete, calls are made within the next day and will last until your specified date.

This community program proves to be very beneficial for both volunteer and the person assigned to them; it builds friendship overtime and it provides a sense of security for seniors who availed Telecross. There are many ways to support this existing Red Cross program such as:  volunteering, referring a senior, registering yourself to the program and contributing financially either by sponsorship or donorship. Even corporations who would want to participate in the said program may do so by volunteering their entire staff in doing the calls every morning.

Check out if the program exists in your area through Australian Red Cross website.

Summer is certainly coming. This is the season to have fun, spend time outdoors, frolic under the sun and sport your expensive swim suit that will surely put younger adults to shame! Summers are meant to be spent outside after all.

Unfortunately, it is not safe anymore for elderly people to do this even for younger seniors who are in great health and fitness levels. 20 years ago, it was even forgivable to go out without that sticky sunscreen and sun protection. You can just walk out and stroll away. I even remember the immediate concern for most environmentalists back then: a little hole in the ozone layer; not thinning, not detrimental but a sure portent of what’s to come. 10 years forward, sun screen is a must; if not, you risk exposing your skin to skin cancer. Yet another 10 years and this is what we get, heat waves. Simply put, this issue is no longer about us as an individual person and how we choose to risk ourselves out there; right now, we don’t have much of a choice but to accept what mother nature is going to give us, whether we like it or not.

Heat waves kill. It kills more than any other natural calamities known to us. Heat waves killed thousands of people in the past and is still killing by hundreds every single year, either reported or not; immediate and by health complications. Heat wave hit Chicago in 1995, and then there was France in 1998, the most recent being this year in Australia, along with others that did not bring too much assault in human race but had been uncomfortably hot nonetheless. Weather experts also warn people that due to global warming, they are expecting temperatures to soar higher this year.

By definition, heat wave is considered as such if and when it lasted at least a day of uncomfortably hot, abnormally high temperature combined with unforgiving humidity. It usually runs for days and even weeks unrelenting. A normal human body needs to cool down after experiencing such combination of humidity and high temperature, similar to a sauna experience; but heat waves are remorseless as they can go for days on end. This, of course, can bring catastrophic results to a human body especially to that of a senior’s.

What others won’t probably know is that elderly people are at a greater risk during heat wave. When the body’s temperature is steadily rising, it will reach its limit and when it does, your body can no longer cool itself down or cooling efforts exerted by your body will no longer be enough especially in elderly people’s cases when their bodies’ ability to cool down is much slower than a younger person’s. This is also true for infants and children ages 4 and below, overweight people and those with disabilities and limited range of motion.

Among any other heat-related implications, heat stroke or sun stroke proves to be the most fatal of them all. Others are sunburn, heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Senior citizen is always advised to stay in climate controlled facilities during hot and humid days to avoid health risks.

11 Most Expensive Catastrophes in History

# 11. Titanic - $150 Million

The sinking of the Titanic is possibly the most famous accident in the world. But it barely makes our list of top 10 most expensive. On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage and was considered to be the most luxurious ocean liner ever built. Over 1,500 people lost their lives when the ship ran into an iceberg and sunk in frigid waters. The ship cost $7 million to build ($150 million in today ‘ s dollars).

# 10.20Tanker Truck vs Bridge - $358 Million

On August 26, 2004, a car collided with a tanker truck containing 32,000 liters of fuel on the Wiehltal Bridge in Germany . The tanker crashed through the guardrail and fell 90 feet off the A4 Autobahn resulting in a huge explosion and fire which destroyed the load-bearing ability of the bridge. Temporary repairs cost $40 million and the cost to replace the bridge is estimated at $318 Million.

# 9. MetroLink Crash - $500 Million

On September 12, 2008, in what was one of the worst train crashes in California history, 25 people were killed when a Metrolink commuter train crashed head-on into a Union Pacific freight train in Los Angeles . It is thought that the Metrolink train may have run through a red signal while the conductor was busy text messaging.. Wrongful death lawsuits are expected to cause $500 million in losses for Metrolink.

# 8. B-2 Bomber Crash - $1.4 Billion

Here we have our first billion dollar accident (and we ‘ re only #7 on the list). This B-2 stealth bomber crashed shortly after taking off from an air base in Guam on February 23, 2008. Investigators blamed distorted data in the flight control computers caused by moisture in the system. This resulted in the aircraft making a sudden nose-up move which made the B-2 stall and crash. This was 1 of only 21 ever built and was the most ex
pensive aviation accident in history. Both pilots were able to eject to safety.

# 7. Exxon Valdez - $2.5 Billion

The Exxon Valdez oil spill was not a large one in relation to the world ‘ s biggest oil spills, but it was a costly one due to the remote location of Prince William Sound (accessible only by helicopter and boat). On March 24, 1989, 10.8 million gallons of oil was spilled when the ship ‘ s master, Joseph Hazelwood, left the controls and the ship crashed into a Reef. The cleanup cost Exxon $2.5 billion.

# 6. Piper Alpha Oil Rig - $3.4 Billion

The world ‘ s worst off-shore oil disaster. At one time, it was the world ‘ s single largest oil producer, spewing out 317,000 barrels of oil per day. On July 6, 1988, as part of routine maintenance, technicians removed and checked safety valves which were essential in preventing dangerous build-up of liquid gas. There were 100 identical safety valves which were checked. Unfortunately, the technicians made a mistake and forgot to replace one of them. At 10 PM that same night, a technician pressed a start button for the liquid gas pumps and the world ‘ s most expensive oil rig accident was set in motion.

Within 2 hours, the 300 foot platform was engulfed in flames. It eventually collapsed, killing 167 workers and resulting in $3.4 Bill
ion in damages.

# 5. Challenger Explosion - $5.5 Billion

The Space Shuttle Challenger was destroyed 73 seconds after takeoff due on January 28, 1986 due to a faulty O-ring. It failed to seal one of the joints, allowing pressurized gas to reach the outside. This in turn caused the external tank to dump its payload of liquid hydrogen causing a massive explosion. The cost of replacing the Space Shuttle was $2 billion in 1986 ($4.5 billion in today ‘ s dollars). The cost of investigation, problem correction, and replacement of lost equipment cost $450 million from 1986-1987 ($1 Billion in today ‘ s dollars).

# 4. Prestige Oil Spill - $12 Billion

On November 13, 2002, the Prestige oil tanker was carrying 77,000 tons of heavy fuel oil when one of its twelve tanks burst during a storm off Galicia , Spain . Fearing that the ship would sink, the captain called for help from Spanish rescue workers, expecting them to take the ship into harbour. However, pressure from local authorities forced the captain to steer the ship away from the coast. The captain tried to get help from the French and Portuguese authorities, but they too ordered the ship away from their shores. The storm eventually took its toll on the ship resulting in the tanker splitting in half and releasing 20 million gallons oil into the sea.

According to a re
port by the Pontevedra Economist Board, the total cleanup cost $12 billion.

# 3. Space Shuttle Columbia - $13 Billion

The Space Shuttle Columbia was the first space worthy shuttle in NASA ‘ s orbital fleet. It was destroyed during re-entry over Texas on February 1, 2003 after a hole was punctured in one of the wings during launch 16 days earlier. The original cost of the shuttle was $2 Billion in 1978. That comes out to $6.3 Billion in today ‘ s dollars. $500 million was spent on the investigation, making it the costliest aircraft accident investigation in history. The search and recovery of debris cost $300 million.

In the end, the total cost of the accident (not including replacement of the shuttle) came out to $13 Billion according to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics..

# 2. Chernobyl - $200 Billion

On April 26, 1986, the world witnessed the costliest accident in history. The Chernobyl disaster has been called the biggest socio-economic catastrophe in peacetime history. 50% of the area of Ukraine is in some way contaminated. Over 200,000 people had to be evacuated and resettled while 1.7 million people were directly affected by the disaster. The death toll attributed to Chernobyl , including people who died from cancer years later, is estimated at 125,000. The total costs including cleanup, resettlement, and compensation to 0Avictims has been estimated to be roughly $200 Billion. The cost of a new steel shelter for the Chernobyl nuclear plant will cost $2 billion alone. The accident was officially attributed to power plant operators who violated plant procedures and were ignorant of the safety requirements needed.

After working his farm every day, an old farmer rarely had time to enjoy the large pond in the back that he had fixed up years earlier with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and benches. So one evening he decided to go down and see how things were holding up. Much to his surprise, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a group of young women skinny dipping in his pond.

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, “We’re not coming out until you leave.”

The old farmer replied, “I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim or make you get out of the pond naked. I only came down to feed the alligator.”

Moral: Old age and treachery will always triumph over youth and skill.
