The yearly festivities involve indulging in too much of almost everything. Pastries, deep-fried foods, chips, peanuts are some snacks seniors may indulge in, not forgetting appetizers, alcohol and dinners. As if we do not have more than enough to eat in a day, over indulging in a single day can be harmful to your body.

If you are on a diet, you may find it difficult to keep up with your healthy meals. The holidays can easily sabotage your goals to remain healthy. To stay healthy and fit for the holidays you can exercise the following tips:

Focus your attention on company and not food

If you have company over to celebrate the holidays, you may want to enjoy the company more than the food. Being with those you love and spending time with them can distract you from indulging in copious amounts of food. Moreover, seniors should avoid being alone since they can unconsciously shovel food down their throats to fill the void.

Don’t forget to exercise

Just because the festive season is here doesn’t mean you should skip your exercises. Ensure you make appointments to exercise at least 3 days a week if not everyday. You can run, walk or go to the gym to burn the calories. Play games with families to keep fit as well.

Shop healthy

If you have to eat a lot then shop healthy. Stock your kitchen with healthy snacks and foods. This eliminates the constant thinking of what to eat and what to avoid and ensures the convenience of eating healthy.

Skip baked foods

Baked products are culprits to being unhealthy during the festive season. You can avoid the baked products by not baking any food items to avoid the temptation of rushing to the kitchen and taking a bite of a piece of any baked goods.

Hydrate

Stay hydrated throughout the festive season. Elderly people can stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids such as water and juices. Eat juicy fruits and limit alcohol, sugary and caffeinated drinks.

Say no

Simply say no to unhealthy foods. People generously offering you food can lead to overeating. If you don’t really want it, just say no.

Be strategic

Do not eat spontaneously. Instead, strategize your meals intake. Outline your meals with some ready strategies. Old individuals can plan ahead to take control of the situation and take on temptations.

Elderly people should heed precautions to the dangers of extreme hot weather. The deadly heat can significantly increase the risk of heat stroke. Seniors do not adjust to heat easily which makes it fast to suffer from heat-related illnesses. The life-threatening condition can be fatal if not treated well.

This form of hyperthermia is the most severe compared to heat exhaustion and heat cramps. Vigorous exertion, dehydration, high humidity and dangerous hot weather are some of the causes of heat stroke.

Chronic medical conditions in elderly people can affect the body’s normal heat regulation processes. Moreover, prescription medication may impair or inhibit perspiration and the body’s power to act on heat.

Symptoms

Seniors suffering from heat stroke may exhibit different symptoms. The symptoms can be similar to other health conditions which is why it is necessary to identify them and ascertain this condition. The symptoms can develop with no particular warning.

Nausea and vomiting

Confusion

Lack of sweating or heavy sweating

Throbbing headache

Strong or weak but rapid heartbeat

Muscle weakness

Hot or red flushed dry skin

Difficulty in breathing

Muscle weakness and cramps

High body temperature

Seizure or even coma

Measures to prevent heat stroke

The current hot weather is the perfect background for heat stroke incidences. Since you are at a greater risk of heat stroke, you need to take the necessary precautions to the preventable condition.

1.	Keep dehydrated

You should drink a lot of fluids but avoid alcoholic drinks. Replacing fluids in your body should be done often rather than when you are thirsty. You can replace water lost in sweat with fluids such as water and energy drinks while avoiding other drinks such as coffee, caffeinated drinks and tea. These drinks can inhibit the rehydration process.

2.	Take a sponge bath, cool shower or bath.

If you are out in the sun you can spray yourself using your garden hose to cool your body down as well.

3. Rest properly.

You can rest in cool shades such as trees if you are outdoors. Use air conditioning or fans to cool off at home while resting.

4.	Wear lose clothing

Avoid wearing tight fitting clothing. You should ensure the clothing is light-colored and lightweight as well.

5.	Reduce your outdoor activities in the heat.

6.	Keep your windows open or air conditioning on while driving.

There are many running techniques used when running long or short distances. The reasons why you run may not be the same for another individual. Some people run because they have made it a routine in the morning in their desire to kip fit. Others run for no particular reason. There are many health benefits associated with running. Running can help reduce the cholesterol and body fats in your body. Another benefit of running is reduced risk of heart disease.

Exercise is an effective tool to aging if used properly. Running can improve your muscle tone, posture and strength, cardiovascular fitness and increase flexibility. It can also help strengthen your bones and joints. Exercises that focus on strengthening and stretching the muscles of the shoulders, knees and core may enable you to work out more consistently and harder.

When you lose fat you lose love handles and your body changes from being lumpy to shapely. The act of running however can cause your skin to sag. This is because as you run your body is pounding against the ground every time your foot hits the ground. The up and down motion may cause your skin to loosen with time.

If you are a bit older and then you lose a lot of weight through running you may have a wrinkly skin. Running to lose weight a little at a time and not drastically may reduce the visible effects of lost weight on the kin. Maintaining this routine can give your body time to adjust to the loss of fat and minimize the visible sagging on your face.

Exposure of the skin to the elements of weather may also cause advanced aging. While you run you should ensure your face is protected from too much sun exposure and wind. Moreover, too much exercise may make you look old especially if you lose too much weight. Seniors who run in hope of achieving a slighter younger body by losing a lot of weight than necessary may seem older.

At the end of the day, running makes your whole body look good. If you are specifically looking at the face you may see a few wrinkles but you may feel beautiful both inside and outside, and younger. You feel the way you look and when you look good you feel good even if it means gaining a few wrinkles for it.

One thing that every one wants is to eat healthy and still keep the food budget in check. This is sometimes hard for many people since it is not easy to figure out the ways of keeping grocery bills low and still enjoy organic products only. A number of people have tried various ways in which they can achieve this and surely there are ways in which one can eat better and healthy foods without supersizing their bills. Here I am going to share with you the various ways in which you too can achieve economical eating for a better and healthy living especially for senior persons.

One way of eating better foods and keeping your bills in check is by shopping for your foods smart and cooking them at home. Smart shopping involves buying the substitute products that are available locally and the ones that have been organically produced. For instance you could prefer to use snap peas instead of fiddlehead ferns which are more expensive thus avoid running up a huge bill. Try to use what is available yet the only ones that are healthy. Cooking at home also allows you to eat cleaner food since you can wash your foods such as groceries thoroughly and this could help wash away chemical sprays that are spayed to keep away insects. Cooking at home also saves you a lot of cost and you can eat your food well-cooked to your liking. Did you ever think how much you could save by baking your breads, muffins among others at home rather than buying? You can bet that the price of making them at home is much cheaper and helps you avoid all the other chemicals that may be used by companies producing them for increased production and maximizing profit. Also blend your juice at home rather than buying the national brands that have been packaged with chemical preservatives added.

Also eating healthy involves eating locally produced foods which are produced organically. The foods are considered expensive than others but they are safe and cannot cause any harm to your body. Eat healthy food to avoid the cost of buying drugs for various diseases which result from eating unhealthy foods. Recently it has been found that a lot of people are spending more on drugs than they are on food. Everyone can agree with me that cheap food can never be a bargain when you consider the cost of diet related maladies such as diabetes obesity among others. You can get local food that is healthy for you at cheaper price than you think and the difference in price between the local and the other is not much. Shop smartly for health groceries and other foods and eat healthy.

One of the easiest tricks to a successful weight loss program is controlling hunger. Contrary to popular notion, hunger doesn’t really lead to weight loss and most of the time, it even backfires and would only make you want to eat more, therefore sabotaging your diet. It goes without saying too that crash dieting is a big no-no and won’t ever get you to lose weight effectively, nor does its effect would last.
For seniors, going hungry in the name of skinniness won’t do you any good. Just think of it this way, did your doctor ever told you to “don’t eat and you’ll be cured”? First of all, no senior is ever recommended of not eating at all, in fact, we’re always encouraged to eat healthy meals several times a day even if these meals are portioned. The point is, you just have to eat, whether you like it or not.
Excluding all would-be health issues, let’s focus on weight loss and hunger management. Below are some helpful tips on how to effectively manage hunger:
· Never, ever miss breakfast. This is the first meal you are going to give your body, this will also be the one which your body will eventually burn so there’s really no harm in having your breakfast every single day. What’s harmful though is when you skip it as there is a chance you’ll end up craving and too hungry for lunch, you’ll eat more than you should.
· Eat eggs in the morning. Eggs are fabulous at keeping hunger at bay. The protein in eggs will keep you full longer than any other kind of food taken in the morning.
· Drink lots of water. If you would like to cut back on your calorie intake, you might want to drink a glass of water before and after a meal. Water makes you feel full while ice cold water makes your body heat up to maintain ideal temperature hence boosting metabolism to burn more calories.
· Avoid anything white such as white bread, white rice as they are refined. You are better off with grainy stuff as they will add fiber in your daily intake.
· Munch on nuts. Nuts are packed full of nutrients you need to ward off hunger. Also nuts, particularly almonds are high in protein, fiber and good fat – a handful is sure to keep you full until your next meal!
· Look for diversions. I once asked a friend who just turned 70 last week what’s the big secret behind her trim and youthful body, she said that the road wasn’t always as smooth as it seemed, that there were times she was hit by cravings so strong she cried but she learned to divert her cravings into activities that instead of taking in more calories, would require her to sweat out, like running or gardening. Just imagine how uncomfortable it would be to run and eat at the same time.
