It is interesting to see how the Federal bureaucracy is frustrated by the serious problems with Air Bags.
We all know that Federal regulators worked for years to make Air Bags mandatory in new cars. First driver side and then passenger side.
Now there have been at least 80 deaths and many more injuries CAUSED BY these Air Bags leaving the regulators in a quandary. They indicated they may permit them to be deactivated or may permit switches to be installed so they can be turned on or off.
Now keep in mind that Air Bags protect the owners and passengers in the car in which they are installed - not the persons in other cars they might hit or be hit by. If I drive a car without Air Bags I am not a threat to other drivers - only potentially to myself.
Note that the regulators must maintain control however. There is no thought being given to permit consumers the choice of buying a car with or without Air Bags. Why should not adults in a free society be able to decide for themselves whether or not they want Air Bags in their car. Why on earth should they have to pay for Air Bags and a switch to turn them on or off?
