Response to: Health Care Now by Martin

This is another naive solution to national health care Health Care. It is always fun to make projections that show everyone getting a free lunch. Unfortunately in the real world the results are usually way off from the projections. Government run systems around the world are encountering both cost and quality problems. Canadians frequently come to the US for treatment of serious medical problems.

The Clinton proposal was a bureaucratic night mare that would have resulted in higher costs and reduced quality.

A classic example is Medicare and Medicaid. The GAO just came out with an estimate that Medicare waste and fraud is presently estimated to exceed 23 billion dollars per year. Medicaid waste and fraud is in a similar range.

Your estimates are nothing but a house of cards based on amateurish guesses. Medicare and Medicaid are presently costing more than five times what was projected at the time these programs were passed. There is no reason to believe your projections are any better. All the programs wind up suffering from unintended consequences.

Government bureaucracies seldom deliver the quality expected and at anywhere close to projected cost. Let's first get Medicare and Medicaid programs under control before further enlarging government involvement in health care.

You can't have "free" anything without wholesale waste, fraud and abuse. Just go to a picnic that serves free beer. The result is excess drunkenness and lots of wasted beer!
