The point is, that the criminalization of marijuana has not stopped its use. Millions of dollars and man-hours have been wasted over the past 30 years trying to prevent its use; yet, it is still as available to my grandchildren as it was to me in the '60's (I chose not to try it).
Our resources are going down the drain without producing any noticeable results. This does not include the thousands of lives that have been ruined by jail-time when we decide to "get tough".
The irony is that users who are NOT caught continue to function well enough in the workplace and in society. So what is the contention REALLY about?
Ending prohibition did not turn us all into drunkards and I doubt that legalizing marijuana will turn us into junkies. There will always be a segment of the population that will indulge in substance abuse whether it is legal or not. If it is legalized, we can levy assorted sin taxes & use the proceeds to treat those who need/want treatment.
