The Interstate highway system is being rapidly demolished by interstate trucking and to the extend they do not pay for the damage they are being subsidised and the amount of that subsidy is enormous. All vehicles including autos should be charged on a per-ton mile basis to restore equity in funding highways rather than the gas tax. Leave a penny of the gas tax in place for funding of Amtrak. Remove the rest in favor of ton-mileage fees. We are about to get a two hundred billion interstate repair bill. I wonder where that money will come from.
RESPONSE
4 July -- Why are people so quick too blame the trucking industry for all the highway problems? I have an idea...... lets get all those BIG RIGS off of the road for a couple of weeks and see if people are so damn quick too complain about america being shut down....WITHOUT TRUCKS..AMERICA WILL STOP. RESPONSE
Michael Johnson Well, seeing as the truckers have to pay $550.00 per year JUST to put their tires on the interstates, plus all the fuel
taxes they pay ( $400.00 to $500.00 EVERY 3 MONTHS!) It looks like that is where all the money is going to
come from. It is ignorant people like you that jjust spout off your stupidity with out looking into the facts, that make
it hard on the truckers, without whom the WHOLE country would shut down. Lets see how you like it when in a
bout a 2 week peroid you wouldnt even have toilet paper to wipe you stupid.......ANd for your information.. weDo pay
a per ton mile basis!!!!!!!!! Plus! We pay 6 cents per gallon more on deisel than you do on gas. It's 18.4 is the federal
tax on gas, while it is 24.4 cents per gallon on deisel. Plus! We pay $1500.00 per year, for our tags. How much do
you pay? Plus, our taxes, then after all that.. then comes out federal income taxes! Not to mention, that we have to
pay people to get your freight off our trucks so you can eat and wipe! Plus! $2500.00 Brokering rights just to tote it
across the state lines.. Gee, I do wonder where the money will come from! Have you ever noticed the IFTA stickers
on the side of a truck? it stands for Interstate Fuel Tax Association. It is people like you who are the 1st to cry
when you get to Wal Mart and what ever you want is not on the shelf!
