Granted, trucks do cause roads to need repair more often than they would under the passage of motorcars but trucks also pay an average of 6 cents per gallon more in fuel tax, use more than 30 TIMES more fuel over the life of the vehicle, and pay 150 times more highway usage taxes, tolls, and fees, and trucks generate billions of dollars in general revenue to numerous industries.
I don't care what anyone or any statistics say, trucks more than pay their own way! Unlike the free-loading, accident causing, non-knowing how to drive, 4-wheel driving general public.
If you want to cut down on wear and tear on the pavement and possibly save some lives in the process, start regulating car travel the way the insurance industry has ( Behind the scenes ) regulated the trucking industry since deregulation.
Most all cars in production today are fuel injected, like trucks and therefore can be speed governed. No vehicle operated on public roads and highways should be capable of traveling at a speed of greater than 65 MPH.
The entire Interstate Highway System ought to be retrofitted with high-speed cameras that capture a vehicles speed and license plate number, and have the capability to transfer this info to law enforcement agencies for violations processing. Then you will see a dramatic increase in the amount of funds available for highway repair and law enforcement, a dramatic decrease in the amount of vehicular fatalities, and a decrease in litigation leading to lawsuit because there will be court certified video documentation of most accidents.
I have been a trucker since 1988 and have never been in an accident in a commercial vehicle, though, I have come close to plowing some asshole who desperately needed it, after flying as fast as they could to get in front of me and then slamming on their brakes.
So, I will close by saying that if anyone is not pulling their weight on the highways its the cars that we should be looking to for a fresh source of revenue, and for all you 4-wheelers out there, the next time you decide that you just have to get around or in front of that truck, just remember this: If that truck should happen to lose its brakes, would you rather be in front of it or behind?
P. S. for all of you smart asses out there, if i did lose my brakes and change your fine, fancy automobile into an immobile, fancy coffin, sure maybe your family will sue the company for lots of money, and most certainly I would be seeking a new career, but, finally, and most certainly of all, you would be DEAD. Just to get some place a second faster than I did. Please, THINK when you are driving, thats what god gave you a brain for and the state gave you a license for.
