It would be difficult to argue with Mr. Mechlenburg's opinions concerning an individual's responsibility for his/her own behavior. However, what should be remembered is that a child does not come into this world as the result of the behavior of one person - it takes two! Therefore, Mr. Mechlinburg's theory that only women should suffer the consequences of inappropriate births is, in itself, inappropriate.
I don't claim to have any answers for the huge problem of children having children. Welfare, however, appears to be the primary problem. Perhaps massive cutbacks now will save the generation of children presently in grade school. Obviously, easy access to birth control methods has not proven successful.
Remember, living together without marriage has become an acceptable practice. Single persons within all economic groups consider it entirely all right to have a child. In fact, it is often glorified by the media. Thus, do we base our scorn just upon those who lack financial resources? And, what about fathers who walk out and leave a single mother to raise the children where she lacks the skills to carry the burden? Do we chastise her alone - take her children?
There are no easy answers.
