- Neuropathy and Diabetes -- My mother has been suffering with this debilitating disease for more than ten years. For the past two years, her neutopathy has gotten
increasingly worse. She has limited use of her hands and is now finding
it very painful and arduous to stand and walk.
I try to keep her hands and legs as warm as possible, but there are
times that NOTHING seems to work. Are there other remedies available
that will grant her some comfort and some freedom from constant pain?
We are desperate for any help and suggestions/recommendations. Thanks,
Linda Thompson T.T.Trans.CO@worldnet.att.net
- Check out the local Ombudsman's program in your area. There is all the
help needed for various problems. This is a Federal Mandated Program I
have been a volunteer for nine years investigating complaints in Nursing
Homes, Residential Facilities, and witnessing Durable Power Of
Attorney's for the elderly. The program is also in need of volunteers.
Call your local office listed in the phone book. Or, look in the yellow pages under "Senior Citizens Organizations." Call your local Area Agency on Aging -- they can help find the Ombudsman near your. Frank W. Maul powsie@inreach.com
- 9-2-97 Lift Needed -- My wife has MS and is in a wheel chair. I have a tough time to put her the bed especialy when she falls on the floor. I am 76 and so is my wife. Is there any kind of lift I CAN USE? Markus Paelian mpaelian@prodigy.net
- Battering of Seniors -- You can quote me on this: I became disabled spring of 95. I applied
for disability and after one year, received it. I also qualified for
medicaid by ONE dollar. This gave me $125 a month medicine. In Dec, they decided to audit my case. They found that they needed to give me $2 a month more. They then canceled my medicaid. On Dec. 19, I had to go to the hospital. I spent 5 days in the county hospital. when I was released, I was told I needed oxygen at home. But who can afford $200 or more out of a $490 check and pay rent, gro, etc too? So I forsake the oxygen.
I called the dept of human resources and social security many times and was told SORRY. I fell between the cracks. There was nothing that could be done. I finally talked to a social security man in Houston Tx. He told me to appeal.,which I did twice. I was asigned a counceler by DHS. She could hardly speak english. She also sent me someone elses papers. I called her and she informed me they were looking for my assets. Like when I cashed in $375 in bonds in 95 to live on which I made all of $16 profit. I had to close my bank account because I had no money to put into it while waiting on social security. But because the account was closed in less that three years, they had to check it. This all happen in Dec.. of 96.
This past Sat. I received notice they had reinstated my medicaid. I
looked at the papers and they were dated from her office 2-6-97., But the date on the papers was 1-1-97. She had let the papers lay on her desk for 5 weeks because I had disagreed and continue to request another counsler. If she had done her job right, I could have had oxygen within 10 days after getting out of the hospital. Needless to say, she did not find the fortune I was
suppose to have hidden away. Sorry, cancer can wipe you out finicially and emotionally which it did to me.
I was offered a job to distribute a weekly magazine, and was glad for the offer. Then I found out because of my past back surgery, I could not do the lifting. I looked for another senior to help me, but to no avail did I find one. So I gave the idea up. I am still in favor that the job would be good for some seniors that do not have my handicaps and need a small suppliment to their income. I am thankful to get my medicaid back but I am going to contact the proper government people to find out why this woman let my papers lay on her desk for 5 weeks. If she does it to me, she will do it to others too. From A. P.
- Onslow Community Ministries, Inc., -- a non-profit Inter-Faith agency in
Onslow County, NC (Jacksonville / Camp Lejeune area), operates the
Caring Community Center out of a renovated department store in downtown
Jacksonville. There we provide a hot meal at lunch time for anyone who
is hungry (approx. 300 per day), and will be opening an emergency night
shelter for the homeless on Feb. 1, 1997. Additionally, our Disaster
Relief Program has offered assistance to the elderly and disabled with
clean-up and repairs associated with Hurricanes Bertha & Fran, both of
which hit our community directly this past summer and fall. We are also
the administrators of a Christmas Cheer project which helped to provide
Christmas meals and toys for approx. 900 families and senior citizens
for Christmas 1996, representing more than 3,000 individuals. We are
now in the process of trying to identify poor elderly and disabled who
need basic repairs or household/yard maintenance. We plan to form a
group of interested teens and adults geared to helping those who can no
longer help themselves to maintain safe and pleasant living conditions,
and cannot afford to pay for these services. If you have a family member
in our area who needs the type of services we offer, and you do not have
the means to help them, please encourage them to call us at (910)
455-5733. There is no charge for any assistance we may provide,
although we would generally hope that funds would be available for the
recipient of our services to buy materials for household repairs. With
the exception of 1 full-time and 3 part-time staff, everyone here is a
volunteer. E-mail Carol Daly -- ocmi@onslowonline.net
- Need Help with Shingles -- My mother has shingles. It covered a large area(about the size of two hands) on her mid-back and there were some blisters and outbreaks to the front torso. She was given medication to block long-term effects. Also she is taking a pain med. The affected area looked like an acute burn, with hundred of
blisters. However, there is still a great deal of discomfort, and the pain continues.
When the meds wear off, and prior to the time she can take the next pill she
has severe pain. We realize that age can make the discomfort more severe, (she is 91). Do you have any suggestions for making her more comfortable, and for improving the condition? I have tried to research the subject but can't find much on shingles. If you can help e-mail Della Brantdt -- delehb@apaynet.com

osteoporosis. It seems impossible to find clothes that fit her. In

time. Does anyone know of a mail-order company offering clothing for
women with this problem? I would welcome alternate suggestions also.

- I have handled my parents insurance submissions for years...I've always
said, doctor bills and insurance statements are so very confusing that I
feel bad for the senior citizens out there who don't have assistance
questioning these statements...I know with my parents bills I've found
overcharges, errors, etc...which I was able to recognize..If I ever could
be of any service to any senior citizen (checking statments, calling a
doctor with questions, etc.) please let me know...I simply feel for their
confusion. E-mail Guastini guastini@pilot.njin.net

- 27 Aug -- Need Some Answers to Questions -- My father, who's 77 years old is about to be released from the hospital after a virus in his blood system. Before this happened he was living on his own. He had a visiting nurse who came in 2 days a week and a health care aid who help with bathing and laundry. He's not going to be able to live by himself, maybe never again. I don't want to put him in a nursing home. Both my wife and I work full time. We're thinking about her quiting or taking family leave to take care of him and move him in with us. I have P.O.A. over his financal matters. Is it legal for me to pay her to take care of him? What is a normal rate for something like this? Is there other alternatives to this arrangement? Any suggestions would be appreciated. P.S. I forgot to mention he's also legally blind. Thanks. E-mail Terry A. Cain -- hchill@otherside.com
- 26 Aug -- Legal Help Needed -- I am an outreach worker for a county in CA. Four (4) months ago I met this wonderfull lady at a senior retirement home. She claimed that her daughter had kicked her out from which her and her husband built years ago. She claimed that the daughter came and kicked her out after the husband had passed away. The house was owned by Jane & Joe Doe. After Joe died, the daughter moved in and out went Jane. Can this be done when Jane & Joe were legally married?. I need help. Please!! My heart aches to see Jane ask; "When can I go home?". "It is my home, I built that home with Joe". Jane is 86 years of age and I feel she does not have long to live. She wants to "go home". The tears on this fraile face make me want to go and tell the daughter how I feel. This will be counter productive. I need legal advise to help Jane before is too late. Please can some one help me to help Jane?. Please!! Thank You. E-mail Ignacio Perez -- fishnbds@succeed.net
