Most cigarettes are sold with a filter.  This device inhibits some of the deadly chemicals from entering the smoker's lungs, but is by no means a safety measure when it comes to smoking.  However, although the smoker may have this filter, individuals surrounding him or her do not have the luxury.  Second hand smoke is incredibly harmful, and often contains higher levels of deadly chemical compounds like carbon monoxide that first hand smoke.  More and more cases of continued exposure to second hand smoke are causing severe health problems in individualsóincluding lung cancer.

Many public places have banned smoking, especially airports, shopping malls, and business offices.  Furthermore, some states, counties, and cities have taken this ban further by completely outlawing smoking in any indoor structure, including restaurants.  If your state, county, or city is working toward an anti smoking law, take the initiative to contact your government official to voice your opinion.  Second hand smoke is deadly, and the more individuals are sheltered from its harmful chemical byproducts, the safer our entire society.

Second hand smoke              Reply to this Comment

I love all these people standing up against second hand smoke. It is about time that people stand up for themselves and get these cancer causers out of our clean breathing environment. However, it appears there is one problem.... there is no health agency that has ever proven that second hand smoke causes cancer. In fact the main study cited by anti-smoking advocates, the 1993 EPA report, was overturned by a North Carolina judge because the agancy EPA "cheated on its evidence" for the finding they hoped to achieve. When will people wake up. Just because you dont like something, you dont have the right to deny others their freedoms. All you second hand smoke haters, I understand, the stuff is grose, but dont cite bunk evidence about something because it inconveniences you. Find some actual evidence and then come talk to me.

I think that if people really know whats good for them, they would stop. They must not care about anyone but themselves. If they die, and they will. Their family and their friends will have to suffer for their mistake. It doesn't make you look cool anyway. Whats really cool is seeing a person fight the addiction so they can be with their loved ones. My sister stoped smoking and she's happier then I've ever seen her. It scares me, but if she can pass through the dark door so can everyone else in the world.

I am 41 yrs old and smoked from the age 15 until 3 months ago. The day my mother told us she was dying from cancer was the day I quit.Even if it is only 1% chance I won't get cancer, it is worth quiting. Every day is a battle for life with my mother, every breath is painfull for her.My brother and I are beside ourselves, her 4 grandchildren are devastated. In 3 months she lost her freedom, her home, her belongings and her will. She lay in a hospice nursing home today.Yes I am glad I quit and I hope I never start again.

2nd hand smoke and cancer              Reply to this Comment

My sister is 46 and has cancer that also has matastisized everywhere . She was a non smoker and was subject to 2nd hand as all for of us were. Now she is very ill and slipping and as for me I have a great multitude of health issues now along with COPD and never smoked in my life. We who do not enjoy smoking our lives away are suffering from polluted air from others whom do. Thank you for the bans in all public places , but for alot of us it is alread way too late to matter.

i always want smokers to stop smoking,as everyone knows how many deaths are caused by second hand hand cigarette smoke.first of all, I just feel like to thank God and all of my relatives who always keep me away from cigarettes. In fact I have learned about second hand smoke and our Family can be toxic, increases risk of lung cancer and heart diseases.that's why my big advice is to keep you standing up against cigarettes, and second hand smoke.

I am an RN working in an Oncology/Hematology outpatient setting. I can tell you as a matter of fact that the major cancer risk is OBESITY, not second hand smoke. It's OK to eat Krispy Kremes but not smoke on the lot....unbelievable!!
