Providing care to people is a hectic job. It is our job to reduce the amount of stress of the caregivers who care for their near and dear ones with a disorder called dementia. We can help the caregivers but we cannot help them get rid of the stress. Depression and poor health are two of the most well known consequences of the caregivers caused by stress.
The latest research performed in Montreal at McGill University reported that if depression is not treated then it could lead to dementia or insanity. It means that your loved one can pass the disease to you.
The depression suffered by caregivers is usually long-term and more ordinary as compared to other disorders suffered by the caregivers.
Some scientists are of the opinion that the reason for this is because caregivers for dementia provide care for quite a long time as compared to caregivers of other disorders.
If your physician suspects that you are suffering from depression then he will ask you nine questions, which are given below. If you just have one symptom then it is possible that you have a depressed mood, not depression. However, if you have five symptoms or more then there is a possibility that you are suffering from depression or despair.
Are you: -
- Sad most of the time or unhappy regularly?
- Suffering from short of energy or exhausted all the time?
- Losing interest in activities, which you used to take pleasure in?
- Always annoyed and disturbed?
- Experiencing a progressive change in your weight or appetite?
- Experiencing an alteration in your sleeping behavior?
- Going through feelings, which makes you, feel useless or responsible for certain things.
- Experiencing difficulties in your concentration level or to think properly.
- Suicidal.
Among the nine questions above, if you feel that your answer is yes to more than five of the questions then it is recommended that you do a self-test on your ability to remember things. A doctor once said to me that a person must have been getting older that if he or she cannot keep track of the keys. He also said that a person might have dementia if he or she does not know what those keys are for.
Given below are few questions, which you can ask yourself to know where you stand on the memory level. Are you facing a problem: -
- Recollecting things more often than before.
- Remembering to do things that you have done often earlier.
- Gaining knowledge of new things.
- Saying phrases or stories over and over again in a discussion.
- Managing money or opting for preferences.
- Remembering what occurs daily.
A caregiver may develop dementia if he or she doesn’t get help for depression. You may have dementia if your answers to the above questions are yes to more than three. Seek advice from your doctor and get his view. Depression as well as dementia can be cured. These situations arise due to stress, lack of sleep, vitamin deficiency or from the side effects of medicines. The help of a doctor can solve your problem.
