Osteoporosis is a silent disease, often undetected in those who are affected by the illness.  Because of this, sufferers may not recognize their problem until they fracture a bone, most commonly the hip, spine, or wrist.  They may also notice a gradually stooping posture or a loss of height.

Preventing osteoporosis from ever starting is the best form of cure for the disease.

It’s never too early for women to begin thinking about how to maintain healthy bone mass.  Even before the age of 30, women are encouraged to take steps to avoid the pain of this disease.

It’s best to begin by talking with your doctor about bone health.  Adhere to their recommendations for creating healthy bones.  They’ll probably advise you to avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake, both of which can affect your bones.  You’ll want to be sure that you’re receiving sufficient amounts of both calcium and vitamin D in your daily diet.  If not, supplements are in order.

Exercise, especially during childhood and adolescence, allows you to reach peak done density.  However, even if you were a sedentary child or teen, it’s never too late to start a serious exercise program.  You don’t need to visit a gym to practice good exercise habits.  A vigorous 30-minute walk each day will be enough to get you on the road to better overall health and serve to increase your bone density.

Also consider undergoing a simple bone density test, especially if you’re over the age of 50.  If the test demonstrates the need for medication, follow your doctor’s orders carefully so as to avoid painful breaks and other symptoms of osteoporosis in the future.
