Zantac is also known as Ranitidine hydrochloride, its chemical
name. Produced by GlaxoSmithKline, this medication comes in a
variety of strengths and can be used for differing levels of
ulceration. Depending on your current medical status, advancement
of ulcers, age, and other factors, your doctor will be able to best
identify which medication works best for you. The usual dosage
begins at 150 milligrams in oral pill form or 10 milliliters in oral
liquid form.
Both forms are taken twice a day, usually once in
the morning and again before bed.
Zantac should not be prescribed if you have shown allergic signs to the
drug or similar drugs in the past. If you have been diagnosed
with a kidney or liver disease, you should not take this
medication. Also, Zantac should not be prescribed if you are
currently taking any medications that may negatively interact with this
medication. Also, when you are prescribed this drug, you should
become aware of any potential side effects. Generally, the side
effects are minimal and usually include headache. Other side
effects include abdominal pain, anemia, depression, constipation, hair
loss, hepatitis, irregular heartbeat, jaundice, vertigo, swollenness,
or diarrhea. These side effects are rare and usually occur in
patients, although you should still be aware of these side effects.
