You should talk to your doctor if you want to take lipitor, to
find out if you are able to take this medication. Let your doctor know
if you have liver disease, because you should not take lipitor if you
do. Your doctor should also be aware if you have a muscular disease,
drink alchol, need to have surgery or have a blood disorder, because he
may need to change the dosage or monitor you more carefully while you
are taking this medication. If you are pregnant or are trying to become
pregnant you should not take lipitor.
It has been known to cause birth
defects. Studies have not been done to determine if lipitor causes
problems in babies that are breastfeeding. It is advised that
breastfeeding mothers not take lipitor.
Experts suggest taking lipitor with a full glass of water. It can be
taken with or without a meal and should ideally be taken at about the
same time everyday. Your doctor should take blood tests after twelve
weeks of treatment, after every increase in dosage and every six
months. As a warning grapefruit and grapefruit juice have been known to
interact with lipitor. You should talk to your doctor about this and
find out how much grapefruit can be in your diet.
Serious side effects for which you should seek medical attention
include: allergic reactions such as swelling of the lips, face or
tongue, difficulty breathing or hives; flu-like symptoms, blurred
vision, yellow skin or eyes, muscle aches or weakness, decreased or
rust-colored urine. Less serious side effects are: headache, rash and
upset stomach. With these side effects you can continue taking lipitor,
but talk to your doctor if they are interfering with everyday
activities or if you have other side effects that seem unusual.
