GROWING OLD
We realize that there are certain things in life, which we know we’ll be worried about at some stage in our life. One of these uncertainties is growing old. Our culture is getting more and more, fixated by the youth syndrome. Not just musicians and film stars are beautiful and young, but it seems that ‘getting young’ is catching up with newsreaders and politicians as well.
Added to this we see the crazy extents to which the elite middle-age groups go in order to retain their youthfulness and look younger. A quick analysis will tell you why growing old have become a distressing factor for a lot of people today.
One thing, which people have realized, for a long time, at ranging levels, is that prime of life or old age is merely a condition of mind. The secret to remaining young therefore, lies both in the body and the mind. Mention Madonna, and the first thing that comes to our minds is not age, is this only due to the reason that she still looks pretty young, or since she is controversial and active as ever, making public hit albums and living life as she always has? Most probably it’s a mix and match of both, however I would suggest that if the mind is young then the body tends to retain its youthfulness too.
Many things can be done to keep the mind and body active and young. One such trick may be to maintain the old pastimes and hobbies, which you have always indulged in. Maintain good physical health. Try out swimming and walking, which are less taxing activities and are easier on the bones and joints.
Take a good look and you’ll see that it’s not totally a young peoples world everywhere. Charitable organizations like, Help The Aged, states ‘elderly’ as someone above the age of fifty. Many fifty year olds would challenge this statement but the actuality remains that there are many people, in this age group, who are preparing to retire. The government, which will implement the age discrimination act in 2006, that penalizes discrimination on account of age, has also recognized discrimination in age whether it is the workplace or elsewhere.
The 50 plus age bracket is probably the fastest increasing section of the populace, also a staggering eighty percent of the nation’s wealth is possessed by people in this age group. Surprisingly they are furthermore the freest and least tied down people. The attitude of our society is on the way towards changing, and may be it is high time that we enjoy prime of life, with all its charm and potentialities for that is what life is about.
