CAREGIVING FOR A PARENT: THE EMOTIONAL CHALLENGES
Are you serving as a caregiver to a disabled or aging parent, a co-worker, a friend or a loved one? Do you want to take up the role as a caregiver? Is it impossible for you to handle the load of emotional stress anymore and you need some help to cope with the problems?
You need to handle the emotional situations successfully while serving as a caregiver to a disabled or aging parent and my personal experiences as a caregiver for my mother would help you to develop that insight.
In the beginning, there will be a great sense of self-worth and accomplishment for the caregivers because they start thinking that whatever they are doing is for a good cause. But with the passing of months or may be some years down the emotion-paved road of care giving, the gung ho attitude is either lost or gets dissipated quickly. Finally, caregivers start feeling dejected, frustrated or even lost.
A fear of the unknown cripples most caregivers. In most cases, they feel that they won’t be in a position to serve people with proper medical care, adequate accommodation or long-term insurance, if and when, they are required. While acting as a caregiver for your parents, you may be more stressed up if you have limited finance.
Care giving often becomes difficult when the caregivers try to allocate time between his or her career and care giving. They should be also aware of the overwhelming legal responsibilities associated with care giving. Preparations regarding certain issues like Healthcare Proxies, naming a Power of Attorney and Living Wills must be taken care of well in advance to avoid physical and emotional hassles or extreme frustrations at times.
Asking for a professional help or seeking support groups is not a demerit of care giving and so find help whenever required. Moreover, you can get a huge resource base, which would assist you in coping up with emotional challenges associated with the care- giving.
