DO YOU LOSE YOUR MIND IN RETIREMENT?
If you speak to any person over the age of fifty years then you will most probably hear them telling you about their poor ability of remembering things. They will tell you about how they had problems remembering people’s names and how much time it took them to find their keys. Moreover, they also have problems regarding certain words, which they want to use, but they don’t remember those words.
Our brain has the tendency to change with age.
Some people’s brain structure can become small where as in some people the brain cells die. However, these changes in the brain do not alter the power of recollection in elderly people. Even though the changes in the brain do not automatically account for the loss of memory but as we age, changes do take place in the normal functioning of our memory.
When we progress to the later stages of life, we suffer from late reactions over and over again. For instance, a person may not be able to remember a common word, which he or she may want to use. According to a study, elderly people whose mental attitudes are positive usually do not have many problems with the functioning of memory. In addition it has been confirmed that those who work out or do exercises, particularly aerobic exercises, have less chances of loss of memory.
You can start off by doing some exercises on a regular basis like dancing, biking or even walking. These exercises should be performed at least three days in a week and not less than one-half of an hour per day. Do not forget to work out your muscles when you are exercising, never leave this kind of exercises out of your routine.
One other important exercise, which you should perform, in order to maintain a quick mind is, intellectual stimulation. By getting to know or learn something new, you can keep your mind active. You should always sleep well because being deprived of sleep can spoil your concentration level. You will need to get sufficient hours of sleep in order to enhance your memory after learning something new and fresh.
Indulge your self in games, which require you to use your mind like board games, card games and crossword puzzles. You memory will be enhanced if you engage yourself in these mind games. Alternatively, you can read books, go to concerts and lectures and even use the computer. If you are active psychologically then you are active emotionally. All this is good for your self-confidence.
