Great site, with lots of information. My best advice is to purchase ltc insurance. Stat's are that over 70% of people who have it actually use it! What other insurance can you say that about? I've gone all my life and not used a dime of my homeowners fire insurance!

The Pension Trap by Susan Himes, Mutual of Omaha Office: 402.399.9300 / Cell: 712.310.4240 / E-mail: susan.himes@mutualofomaha.com Are you looking forward to a comfortable retirement, one that you and your spouse can enjoy? Like many people, you’re probably counting on your employer’s pension plan to play an important role in your overall retirement plans. If your employer does provide a pension plan, you’ll need to make some important decisions about your pension as you near retirement. Federal law enacted in 1974 requires pension plans to have options that provide for the continuation of all or a portion of the retiree’s pension to their spouse upon the death of the retiree. In fact, to opt out of this “joint and survivor” option (which can reduce your pension by 10%-30%), the signature of both the retiree and the spouse is required. You’ll choose your pension option just prior to retirement, and it can impact both you and your spouse for many years. Normally, once this decision is made it cannot be changed regardless of how your situation has changed. This is the “pension trap!” • Payouts cannot be changed and “lump sums” are not available • If the spouse dies first, the reduced “joint and survivor” payouts still apply One popular alternative to the “pension trap” is using life insurance to provide the surviving spouse’s income, replacing the income that the pension plan would have provided. With life insurance in place, the spouse could waive their rights to survivor benefits, allowing the retiree to elect the maximum monthly pension. Life insurance benefits give the spouse more flexibility for income needs than would have been provided with the survivor benefit from the pension. • A lump sum can be taken to pay off debt and the balance used for income purposes • The income amount can be increased if the situation requires it • At the surviving spouse’s death there may be funds remaining for the benefit of the children, the grandchildren or a favorite charity • If the spouse should die before the retiree, the life insurance cash values could be used to augment the retiree’s pension income, and the beneficiary changed to include the children, grandchildren or a favorite charity. Despite the advantages and flexibility provided by life insurance, it may not be the solution for everyone. In order to qualify you need to be in good health. It’s a good idea to check before making a decision regarding your pension. In fact, it may be a good idea to make that check now, while you have good health. It’s always smart to plan ahead, especially if you don’t want to find yourself in that “pension trap.”

Borrowing Money — Know the Risks by: Susan Himes, Mutual of Omaha Office:402.399.9300 /Cell: 712.310.4240 / E-mail: susan.himes@mutualofomaha.com Many people don’t hesitate to borrow money when it’s time to make a major purchase, take a vacation, or improve their homes. Loans are often easy to obtain, and low interest rates can add to the allure. Be careful. Before you borrow money, be sure you’re comfortable with your ability to repay and you fully understand the risks. Retirement Plan Loans If you participate in a retirement plan at work, you may be able to borrow money from your account. The interest rate may be reasonable, and you may be able to repay the loan conveniently through payroll deduction. These are all positives. But also consider the negatives. If you borrow from your account, you’ll have to repay the loan (both principal and interest) with after-tax money. In a 35% tax bracket, for example, you’d need $15,385 of taxable income to repay $10,000. And most plans require participants who leave their employers to repay the loan in full. Amounts you don’t pay back would be considered distributed — increasing your taxable income that year. Home Loans When you meet all tax law requirements, you can deduct home mortgage and home equity interest (within limits) if you itemize your deductions. So far, so good. But also consider the risks. This type of debt is secured by your home. You shouldn’t take on more debt than you can comfortably handle. Then consider the possibility that you may want to — or have to — sell your home some day. You’d have to pay off the balance(s) of your loan(s) at that time. In a declining real estate market, it’s possible your sales proceeds might be less than your loan balance(s). And, before agreeing to a variable rate loan, consider the potential effect of rising interest rates on your payments. Credit Cards What could be easier than pulling out the plastic when you want to buy something? But, once again, know the risks. Overspending is never a good idea, especially when it means carrying a balance on your credit card for long periods. Even if the rate is highly competitive, consumer interest can really add up.

I am a healthy 60 year old man with a lot of experience in home improvement(38 yrs.) I have the equipment to do any home improvement or rehab, all paid for. As we approach the senior years of our lives we are often called upon to teach others and to help others. Now there is something out there to help us earn income so easy it is unbelieveable! Like you I have entered the latter season of my life and like you I need additional income to buy that present for the grandchild, and money to take that trip to Las Vegas or Hawaii. Maybe you would like to have a winter home in Arizona, and keep your home where you are at now for the summer. This is no gimmick, or fly by night deal, or scam. Well I have news for you, now there is a way to generate income from home, or even at the library or Senior center. If I can do this so can you! One of the most important commodities that we have is time, and that is all it is going to take is a little of your time.
