Sensitive Skin

8 Tips for Preventing Contact Dermatitis

Skin care products, makeup, perfumes and other cosmetics are a large part of our life.
Nothing can ruin your day like a rash on your face. They seem to magically appear just before the big reveal. For all of us, especially those with sensitive skin, “irritant contact dermatitis” or the more serious “allergic contact dermatitis” is a risk associated with any chemical substance applied to our skin.

Fortunately, severe allergic reactions to cosmetics are rare. Unfortunately, mild or even severe skin irritations, which can include itchy red patches, swelling, burning or stinging, blistering and later scaling and peeling, are not uncommon. Here are some practical tips which can reduce your chances of experiencing skin reactions to cosmetics:

1)    Look for products that are hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. These are less likely to cause a problem. I prefer to select products with simple formulas, thus fewer ingredients. This helps me narrow down the offending ingredient if I experience a problem. I find that “natural” or “organic” products seem safer to me, but by all means, this doesn’t mean they cannot give you a rash.
2)    Try a skin test by applying the product to your inner wrist and wait 24 hours to see if you develop a negative reaction.
3)    If you use a product that irritates your skin – Stop applying any cosmetics to the affected area at once. In most cases of mild skin irritation, treatment with a low dosage over-the-counter topical ointment is recommended. However, your doctor should be consulted for proper treatment. He may also help you identify allergies through skin patch testing.
4)    Do not share makeup or makeup applicators or brushes with anyone. You should use disposable applicators whenever available. Clean brushes and reusable applicators frequently.
5)    Discard outdated products. Many products require preservatives. Over time they may no longer be effective against bacterial contamination.
6)    Perfumes and fragrances are sometimes a cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Try putting these on your clothing rather than on your skin. Select fragrance–free cosmetics if you have experienced a problem with perfume in the past.
7)    Read the product’s directions for use and any warning labels. Follow the directions and heed the warnings. Avoid excessive or inappropriate use of any skin care product.
8)    Read the label and make a note of the product’s ingredients if you experience a negative reaction. This is the 1st step in the process of eventually identifying the ingredient that you should avoid in the future.

Following these simple tips cannot guarantee success but they should help you avoid
that rash before your next Big Reveal.

Sailing Single Seniors™              Reply to this Comment

Retired But Not Yet Expired? Then join us for some FUN AFTER 50! as Sailing Seniors™ Set sail on Celebrity Cruises to Alaska! Celebrity Mercury - August 25, 2006 Sailing round trip from Seattle Drink in the splendor of the Alaskan Cruise wilderness as you sip cappuccino from your veranda on our Alaska senior cruise! Catch sight of a humpback whale or wolf pups frolicking in the snow. From the breathtaking sights of Hubbard Glacier to the pioneering spirit of Juneau, the gold-rush spirit of Skagway and the totem poles of Ketchikan, Celebrity's Alaska is as rustic and romantic as one could ever imagine. As you explore Alaska's magic and unspoiled dominion, Celebrity's guides and naturalists share their intimate knowledge to help make this extraordinary experience even more unforgettable. A shore excursion is an ideal way to explore the nuances and traits of various Alaskan ports of call. From an exhilarating glacier helicopter tour to kayaking amidst waterfalls and protected coves, experience the natural wonder of this vast territory up close. All excursions are led by courteous, knowledgeable and passionate guides who will share with you rare insights about life in Alaska and all its magical inhabitants. Itinerary- Friday: Aug 25 Seattle, Washington Departure Depart 5:00 PM This is one of the most famously beautiful passages in all the world. It features virtually everything you came to Alaska hoping to see, including rain forests, glaciers, fjords and white-capped peaks. All of which create a setting that's perfect for viewing whales and sea lions. Enjoy the Meet & Greet Senior Cocktail Party! Saturday: Aug 26 At Sea Sunday: Aug 27 Juneau, Alaska Docked Arrive 1:00 PM Depart 11:00 PM Where Earl Grey meets Eddie Bauer ® would be a good way to describe the charms of Alaska's capital city. Here the pioneering spirit lives on in an interesting mix of cosmopolitan chic and frontier ruggedness. Visit the Alaska State Museum and its exquisite collection of Russian Orthodox and Gold Rush relics. Monday: Aug 28 Skagway, Alaska Docked Arrive 7:00 AM Depart 3:00 PM It's doubtful you'll succumb to gold fever, but if any place on earth can summon up the thrill of prospecting, it's Skagway. By embracing its gold-rush past, Skagway has managed to preserve a frontier spirit complete with saloons and dance-hall revues. If the spirit does overtake you, passage on the White Pass & Yukon Railway or a ride on the Klondike Highway will take you to places where you can roll up your sleeves and do some prospecting of your own. Tuesday: Aug 29 Hubbard Glacier (Cruising) Cruising Arrive 6:30 AM Depart 11:00 AM Hubbard Glacier is the one glacier in the world that does not move at a glacial pace. Quite the opposite. In fact, in 1986, Hubbard Glacier - the largest tidewater glacier on the North American continent - moved an average of just under 5.5 feet per hour. Keep a watchful eye as you sail through the Yakutat Bay, as you may be a witness to geological history. Wednesday: Aug 30 Ketchikan, Alaska Docked Arrive 9:00 AM Depart 3:00 PM In addition to being the jumping-off point for seaplane excursions into the Misty Fjords National Monument and its 2.2 million acres of wilderness nirvana, Ketchikan is also the ancestral home of the Tlingit tribe. Another "must-see" here is the world's largest collection of totem poles. You can learn what motivates someone to turn a piece of lumber into a towering work of art at the Saxman Native Village and Totem Bight and Totem Heritage Center. Wednesday: Aug 30 Prince Rupert, B.C. Docked Arrive 9:00 PM Depart 11:59 PM Due in part to its status as one of the oldest continuously occupied regions of the world, Prince Rupert has developed a rather unique culture. A thriving arts community that has produced globally acclaimed artists makes this north coast enclave a stop worth making. Thursday: Aug 31 Inside Passage (Cruising) Friday: Sep 01 Seattle, Washington Arrival Arrive 7:00 AM Ship Facts- Occupancy: 1884 Tonnage: 77,713 Length: 866 feet Beam: 105.6 ft Draught: 25.5 Cruisespeed: 21.5knot Inaugural Date: Nov 02, 1997 For those who may wonder if there's life on Mercury, we're here to tell you that there most definitely is. accessiblity for seniors and creative expression              Reply to this Comment

recently my car was towed by our fair city of Chicago streets and sanitation department. I remained calm until I realized the whole bill including towing and a ticket came too $235.00 dollars and my friend paid the cab fare. NOw as a 68 yr senior this makes no sense..and the way that they implemented to towing was unclear and unfair....our marking are not available for handicapped downtown...I am not going to drive down anymore put drive to a public transportation site. Other than that I am a teacher of action techniques and enjoy poetry, theatre and creating workshops. My next workshop will be "Beyond Words" Anyother like minded people out there. Ta, ta, have to get ready now to go too the pool and will be picking up a pal at our airporte who is coming in from Australia..I am hoping to push myself to go to Melbourne and New Zealand next January...lorelei
