In addition to getting discounts directly from hotels, motels or
bed & breakfast inns, you can also get discounts by virtue of being
a member of seniors organizations such as the AARP. Some hotels in
prime senior destinations offer excellent discount packages, but it's
always a good idea to compare prices in any case. A competing hotel may
offer lower rates overall, even undercutting another hotel's discount
rate. If possible, see if you can get a picture of the room and the
hotel ahead of time.
Most reputable hotels have Web sites featuring
pictures of their facilities.
You may also want to find out if the hotel offers a "senior-friendly"
room. Many hotels do offer rooms that are on the first floor, are
easily accessible and handicap-equipped. If you need any of these extra
facilities, don't hesitate to ask the hotelier--and you should still be
able to get your discount.
Many travel bureaus specialize in delivering travel packages to
seniors, which include the hotel, travel, and tickets to prime tourist
destinations, all with a senior discount applied to the entire package.
Another innovation is the Elderhostel, a type of senior version of the
hostel frequented by the younger crowd. Elderhostel sites combine
inexpensive accommodations with fun adventures of all variety. Many
Elderhostel adventures focus on learning a skill or a craft, or
exploring a certain part of the country. There are biking, sailing, and
hiking Elderhostel programs, all of which are available at excellent
prices.
