Many companies offer these discounts directly. Seniors can obtain
further senior travel discounts by joining organizations such as AARP
and NARFE. If you are traveling, always ask if there is a senior
travel discount available. This information may not always be offered,
but if you ask, you may be surprised with how much you can save.
And
once you get to your destination, the savings don't stop--always ask
for senior discounts when entering national parks and other tourist
destinations.
Many seniors enjoy traveling several months out of the year. Before you
take wing and enjoy your time off, though, take a look at your health
insurance policy to determine whether you will be covered while
traveling. You may need to get a rider on the policy to add coverage
outside of your area. This will almost always be necessary if you plan
to travel outside of the country.
A word about discounts of any type: Always comparison shop, regardless
of discounts. While many senior travel discounts are legitimate and
great deals, sometimes another company may offer a regular fare price
that is less than their competitor's senior discount price. Don't
assume that the senior discount price is always going to be the best
price available. Also, there may be restrictions. If you're retired,
you're probably a bit more free in your departure times, so these
restrictions may not affect you--but be aware of them, since you may
have to make adjustments to your schedule in order to take advantage of
them.
