An easy place to cut costs is in the mental-health benefits area,
because no one is going to complain. Despite all these issues, many
businesses slash their mental health benefits. Tim Bowles, director of
planning and public information at Texas Panhandle Mental Health Mental
Retardation, calls it a "bootstrap mentality.” If you're down, many try
to reach down and grab their bootstraps and pick themselves back up,"
Bowles said. "Often times, they try to treat themselves by overeating,
increasing their alcohol intake, and sleeping more. They might develop
a dependency to painkillers." Indeed, the stigma attached to mental
health conditions can prevent illness-related concerns from being fully
addressed.
