“We have an obligation to protect the fastest-growing segment of
the population,” Senator John Breaux said as he proposed his
legislation on financial exploitation of the elderly.
Over the past three years, 588 people in Delaware
alone have been rejected for jobs as health care providers of the
elderly after criminal background checks. Elderly abuse comes in many
forms. One such case involved an elderly woman who answered her door to
men who offered to repair her leaky roof. They convinced her they were
reliable, charged her $4500.00 and went on their way. It was later
found that they had sprayed driveway tar on her roof.
