However, there are other ways that medicare beneficiaries might
gain access to added benefits. This is done through supplementing the
coverage.
Since the beginning of Medicare in the 1960’s, many
elderly people have purchased supplemental insurance policies to help
cover the gaps in the basic Medicare benefit package. Privately
purchased supplemental policies can be used; these are often referred
to as “Medigap” policies and have various benefit packages that are
marked “A” through “J”. Employer-sponsored retiree medical coverage is
also available for some Medicare beneficiaries and is not subject to
the restrictions on benefit design.
