The more youthful residents may be there for extended periods
because of disease or injury. There may also be short time younger
residents recuperating from surgery or undergoing rehabilitation.
Financial pressures are giving nursing homes little
choice other than to actively recruit nontraditional residents. This
new approach is working for many facilities and also has benefits for
the existing residents. Increased activities for the “younger set” are
rubbing off on the elderly residents who are experiencing a renewed
zest for life. For many health care providers, these new facilities are
considered the wave of the future.
