Scientists have proven that owning a pet has emotional and health
benefits. A study published in the journal of the American Geriatrics
Society showed that independently living seniors that have pets tend to
have better physical health and mental well being than seniors who
don’t have a pet.
Studies have also shown that senior pet owners have
significantly lower blood pressure than their contemporaries. There are
a number of reasons for exactly how pets accomplish these health
benefits. Pets need feeding, grooming, and walking. All of these
activities require action on the per owner’s part. Consistently
performing this kind of minor exercise can keep pet owners able to
carry out the normal activities of daily living.
Pets and the elderly have a lot to give each other.
They can fill a senior’s life with years of unconditional love and
companionship.
