Founder Margaret Owens is a widow and an attorney who works on
behalf of women’s rights in developing countries. “So many women have
been widowed due to HIV/AIDS and in some developing countries the women
whose husbands have died of AIDS are accused of witchcraft and are
ostracized and persecuted.
As a result of these beliefs and harmful practices,
widows and child widows are rendered invisible and are subjected to
many human rights violations including: violence, cultural and social
exclusion, and extreme poverty. Ms. Owens has brought these issues
before the United Nations Committee for Human Rights and recommended
that action be taken to end cruel and discriminatory practices against
widows. She has also recommended the implementation of new women’s
rights laws to help widows through legal, cultural, and religious
institutions.
