Euthanize or Be Discharged

This home is forcing my family to decide whether or not to allow palliative sedation of my terminally ill husband, which will render him unconscious and unable to eat or drink, and result in an earlier than necessary death, or they will kick him out in 10 days.  They say they only want him sedated to the point that he won't get out of bed.  Hospice has informed them that palliative sedation is the only way to do this.  They do not care.  Hospice is not recommending palliative sedation.  He is still mobile, he is in no pain.  Hospice is taking care of all of his medications.  They just don't want him there.  They are refusing to find him a new placement before discharging him in spite of nursing home dumping laws.

I cannot care for him at home.  If I do not allow the palliative sedation and I do not pick him up in 10 days they will call a cab and send him on his way.  He is terminal, adjudicated incompetent by the courts.  He cannot speak or care for himself and needs 24/7 care and they want to call him a cab and send him on his way.  AVOID THIS HOME AT ALL COSTS!!!  Your loved one's life may depend upon it!

You may find it of interest how one person handled another nursing home in the area. Go to the posts for " Englewood Heathcare and Rehab. Englewood, Florida. With your difficult dilemma,I hope you had faith and family to make the right decisions. Nursing homes that are for profit corporations, look at the bottom line."MONEY AND PROFIT. Sad so sad..

If you must place your loved one in a nursing home facility, then you will need to do the research yourself. Federal Regulations do not require State inspectors or the nursing home to notify patients and/or their families that a particular patient's care has been the subject of a survey violation. Even a finding of substandard care or actual harm does not require notification. Ask the nursing home administrator and the attending physician as to their policy regarding notification. In some cases you may need the assistance of your family attorney. Informed consent regarding continued care at a given facility is not possible without knowing the truth. More recent reports/corrections/complaint surveys may be available. Ask the nursing home administrator. Since you obviously have a computer then go to MemberoftheFamily.net. Also, tour the facility yourself. Pay close attention to the areas like showers/AC units/look evidence of pest/ect. And after your family member has been amitted...watch for anything that you may have missed everytime you visit. You have the right to ask questions and to right to get the truth! Remember to check out the state survey every year. If your facility has volations then they will have state inspections more often. The State of Florida will inspect every few months...depending on how bad the volations are. I have worked in this field for many years. I can only warn you about the things I have seen. You have be your own investigator and your own judge. Do your part well. Your family member can only depend on you and not the faciliy that you choose for them. Best of luck to you.
