Nursing Homes

Is there a nursing home in your future? Do you have a family member that may need to be placed in a nursing home? There are currently over one million residents in the more than 19,000 nursing homes in the United States. The nursing home population has been growing, and continue to grow with the increase in the number of elderly. While only 5% of the elderly population is in a nursing home at any one time, approximately 20% to 30% of all people can expect to spend some time in a nursing home setting.

Before considering placement of a loved one or friend in a nursing home, explore the possibility of using alternative services or programs that permit an older person to receive needed services in his or her own home or other community setting. Then there are some institutions that have change from a nursing home to a rehabilitation facility. Rehab provides retraining of individuals who have suffered some physical impairment so they can again gain a resonable degree of independence and return to their homes rather that be housed in a nursing home. One example of a rehabilation facility is the Madonna Foundation in Lincoln, Nebraska
