Yearning
-- by Don Milford- Copyright 1999 -- steldon@nbnet.nb.ca

Sometimes my life is boring;
Some days it makes no sense;
I wonder, is there more to life
Outside that chain-link fence?

I知 so frustrated with this yard,
I know it, end to end,
There痴 nothing new for me to see,
So I must just pretend!

Pretend that there痴 an open gate
And I can walk right through,
Then when I get outside the fence
There値l be so much to do!

I値l make believe that I am free
To wander far and wide,
Unfettered by that garden fence,
In this, the great outside!

What fun to bark at mailmen,
To chase cars down the street,
To nip at passing trouser legs,
To growl at cats I meet!

I値l tease the dog who lives next door,
He痴 always on a chain.
I値l get in close to steal his bone
Then jump away again!

Perhaps some children playing ball
Will let me join their fun,
But then they値l have to chase me
When I catch their ball and run!

But soon I hear my mistress call!
Though dreams are so intense,
Reality intrudes again;
I知 still behind the fence!
