Our Younger Days

We started our education in a good old country school.
The teacher taught all subjects and read us stories too.
She had to teach many children in grades one through eight.
It must have been difficult to keep everything straight.

It kept her very busy, but she tried to teach us well.
We had to get water for school from a neighbours well.
We used slates to write on and slate pencils as well.
We learned how to read, write, also, to spell.

We studied health, geography and history too.
There was always much work for the teacher to do.
The girls were taught to keep the school room neat.
The boys carried wood for the stove for heat.

We had many school concerts where each student had a part.
The families were pleased the way the children played their parts
When you finished grade eight you went to school in town.
We went on to study geometry, science and other subjects too.
Most of us graduated and went on to further studies too.
From that country school have come authors, lawyers, physicians, inventors too.
It proves you could get a good education starting out in a country school.
